Inspection and Verification

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2008 Ford RV Cutaway, 2008 Ford Econoline, 2008 Ford E450 Super Duty, and 2008 Ford Cutaway. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Verify the customer concern by checking the air bag warning indicator in the instrument cluster. Refer to Prove Out Procedure .
  2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage. Do not disconnect electrical connectors until directed to do so within the pinpoint test.
    VISUAL INSPECTION CHART

    Mechanical Electrical
    • Damaged restraints control module (RCM) or loose mounting
    • Damaged front impact severity sensor or loose mounting
    • Open smart junction box (SJB) fuse 20 (10A)
    • Damaged wiring harness
    • Loose, damaged or corroded connectors
    • Circuitry open/shorted
    • Damaged shorting bars
  3. NOTE: The smart junction box (SJB) may also be identified as the generic electronic module (GEM).
  4. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  5. NOTE: Make sure to use the latest scan tool software release.
  6. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the data link connector (DLC).
  7. NOTE: The vehicle communication module (VCM) LED prove out confirms power and ground from the DLC are provided to the VCM.
  8. If the scan tool does not communicate with the VCM:
    • check the VCM connection to the vehicle.
    • check the scan tool connection to the VCM.
    • refer to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK article, No Power To The Scan Tool, to diagnose no communication with the scan tool.
  9. If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
    • verify the ignition key is in the ON position.
    • verify the scan tool operation with a known good vehicle.
    • refer to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK article to diagnose no response from the PCM.
  10. Carry out the network test.
    • If the scan tool responds with no communication for one or more modules, refer to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK article.
    • If the network test passes, retrieve and record on-demand and continuous memory DTCs from the RCM.
  11. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) DTC Chart. For all other DTCs, refer to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES article.
  12. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, go to Symptom Chart .
