Wheel Knuckle - Drum Brakes: Removal

All vehicles 

  1. Remove the wheel and tire. For additional information, refer to WHEELS AND TIRES article.
  2. Remove the brake shoes. For additional information, refer to DRUM BRAKE article.
  3. Remove the parking brake cable bracket-to-control arm bolt.
  4. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the brake backing plate.
    • Remove the parking brake cable from the brake backing plate.

  6. Disconnect the brake tube from the wheel cylinder and remove the brake tube bracket bolt.

    Vehicles equipped with anti-lock brake system (ABS) 

  8. Remove the ABS wheel speed sensor bolt and the 2 ABS wheel speed sensor harness bolts.
  9. Remove and position the wheel speed sensor and harness aside.
  10. All vehicles 

  11. Remove the coil spring. For additional information, refer to Spring .
  12. Remove the lower ball joint nut.
  13. CAUTION: The joint area must be free of foreign material to make sure of correct clamping.
  14. Index-mark the notch on the cam nut adjustment cam.
  15. Remove and discard the wheel knuckle bolt.
  16. Remove and discard the cam nut.
  17. Remove the wheel knuckle.
