PINPOINT TEST F: DTCs B2844 AND U2472 - IGNITION FAULT AND UNEXPECTED IGNITION STATE

CAUTION:
Use the Flex Probe Kit for all test connections to prevent damage to the wiring terminals. Do not use standard multi-meter probes.
- F1 RETRIEVE THE DTCs
- Connect the diagnostic tool.
- Key in ON position.
- Carry out the on-demand self test for the SJB. Retrieve and record any DTCs.
- Is DTC U2472 and/or B2844 present?
- YES : Go to F2.
- NO
: For DTC B2A20, go to Pinpoint Test E .
For DTC B1352, go to Pinpoint Test G .
For all other SJB DTCs, REFER to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES article.
- F2 CHECK THE IGNITION SWITCH
- Key in OFF position.
- Carry out the Ignition Switch - Electrical Component Test. Refer to appropriate COMPONENT TESTING article.
- Is the ignition switch OK?
- YES
: For DTC U2474, go to F3.
For DTC B2844, go to F7.
- NO : INSTALL a new ignition switch. REFER to Ignition Switch . TEST the system for normal operation.
- F3 CHECK INSTRUMENT CLUSTER PARAMETER IDs (PIDs)
- Connect: Ignition Switch C250
- Key in ON position.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: DataLogger/Instrument Cluster PIDs: Ignition Switch
- Check the following instrument cluster PIDs:
- IGN_OFF
- IGN_A
- IGN_R
- IGN_R/S
- IGN_S
- Do the IGN_R and IGN_R/S PIDs both display YES and all other IGN PIDs display NO?
- YES
: The system is operating correctly at this time. CLEAR the DTCs. Have an assistant MONITOR the PIDs while TEST DRIVING the vehicle and then while FLEXING the wire harness. If the PID values change, go to the appropriate pinpoint test step as indicated below.
If the PID values do not change, go to F11.
- NO
: Before installing any new components, make sure to diagnose all PIDs that do not display the correct information.
If the IGN_OFF PID displays YES and all the other IGN PIDs display NO, go to Pinpoint Test A .
If the IGN_A PID displays YES, go to F4.
If the IGN_R and/or IGN_R/S PID displays NO, go to F5.
If the IGN_S PID displays YES; for hybrid vehicles Go to F6, for non-hybrid vehicles Go to F7.
- F4 CHECK CIRCUIT CDC33 (VT/GN) FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE NOTE: To access the SJB connector, the floor console must be removed.
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: SJB C2280a
- Disconnect: Ignition Switch C250
- Key in ON position.
- Measure the voltage between ignition switch C250-6, circuit CDC33 (VT/GN), harness side and ground.
- Is voltage present?
- YES : REPAIR circuit CDC33 (VT/GN). CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
- NO : Go to F11.
- F5 CHECK CIRCUIT CDC33 (VT/GN) AND CDC34 (WH/OG) FOR AN OPEN NOTE: To access the SJB connector, the floor console must be removed.
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Ignition Switch C250
- Disconnect: SJB C2280a
- Disconnect: SJB C2280b
- Measure the resistance between ignition switch C250-6, circuit CDC33 (VT/GN), harness side and SJB C2280a-3, circuit CDC33 (VT/GN), harness side.
- Measure the resistance between ignition switch C250-1, circuit CDC34 (WH/OG), harness side and SJB C2280b-45, circuit CDC34 (WH/OG), harness side.
- Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?
- YES : Go to F11.
- NO : REPAIR the affected circuit(s). CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
- F6 CHECK CIRCUIT CDC35 (BU/WH) FOR AN OPEN NOTE: To access the SJB connector, the floor console must be removed.
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: SJB C2280b
- Disconnect: PCM C175b
- Disconnect: Ignition Switch C250
- Measure the resistance between ignition switch C250-7, circuit CDC35 (BU/WH), harness side and SJB C2280b-32, circuit CDC35 (BU/WH), harness side.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
- YES : Go to F11.
- NO : REPAIR circuit CDC35 (BU/WH). CLEAR the DTC. REPEAT the self-test.
- F7 CHECK CIRCUIT CE619 (BU/BN) FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE NOTE: To access the SJB connector, the floor console must be removed.
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: SJB C2280b
- Disconnect: Transmission (TR) Range Sensor C167
- Disconnect: PCM C175b
- Key in ON position.
- Measure the voltage between SJB C2280b-32, circuit CE619 (BU/BN), harness side and ground.
- Is voltage present?
- YES : REPAIR circuit CE619 (BU/BN). CLEAR the DTC. REPEAT the self-test.
- NO : Go to F8.
- F8 ISOLATE THE TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR
- Key in OFF position.
- Connect: Transmission (TR) Range Sensor C167
- Key in ON position.
- Measure the voltage between SJB C2280b-32, circuit CDC35 (BU/WH), harness side and ground.
- Is voltage present?
- YES : INSTALL a new TR sensor. REFER to AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - CD4E article. CLEAR the DTC. REPEAT the self-test.
- NO : Go to F9.
- F9 ISOLATE THE PCM
- Key in OFF position.
- Connect: PCM C175b
- Key in ON position.
- Measure the voltage between SJB C2280b-32, circuit CE619 (BU/BN), harness side and ground.
- Is voltage present?
- F10 CHECK THE PCM CONNECTORS
- Disconnect: PCM C175b
- Check the PCM connector for:
- corrosion.
- pushed-out pins.
- spread terminals.
- Connect: PCM C175b
- Make sure the connectors are seated correctly, then operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
- YES : INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - 2.3L article for 2.3L engines and ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - 3.0L (4V) article for 3.0L engines. CLEAR the DTC. REPEAT the self-test.
- NO : The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
- F11 CHECK THE SJB CONNECTORS NOTE: To access the SJB connector, the floor console must be removed.
- Disconnect: SJB C2280a
- Disconnect: SJB C2280b
- Check SJB connectors C2280a and C2280b for:
- corrosion.
- pushed-out pins.
- spread terminals.
- Connect: SJB C2280a
- Connect: SJB C2280b
- Make sure the connectors are seated correctly, then operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
- YES : INSTALL a new SJB. REFER to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES article. CLEAR the DTC. REPEAT the self-test.
- NO : The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
