Normal Operation

The passive anti-theft system (PATS) uses a visual anti-theft indicator located in the instrument cluster (IC). This indicator proves out for 3 seconds when the key is turned to the ON or START position under normal operation. If there is a PATS concern, this indicator either flashes rapidly or glows steadily (for more than 3 seconds) when the key is turned to the ON or the START position.

One or more PATS DTCs may set in the IC. Refer to DTC Charts . A PATS no-start may involve a vehicle no-start due to either the fuel injectors not operating or the electronically-controlled continuously variable transmission (eCVT) not cranking the engine (or both). A low battery voltage may cause the PATS to allow starter (the eCVT starts the engine) operation, but may keep the fuel injectors from operating. Also, a key read issue may keep the fuel injectors from operating, while a TCM-PCM ID issue may be at fault if there is no starter operation, although a key read issue may also be the cause of an inoperative starter (eCVT). PATS also flashes the anti-theft indicator every 2 seconds at key off to act as a visual theft deterrent. The anti-theft indicator operation is controlled by the IC.
