Pinpoint Test B: DTC B1884 - Pad Warning Lamp Circuit Failure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2008 Mercury Mariner and 2008 Ford Escape. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: Do not handle, move or change the original horizontal mounting position of the restraints control module (RCM) while the RCM is connected and the ignition switch is ON. Failure to follow this instruction may result in the accidental deployment of the safety canopy and cause serious personal injury or death.
WARNING: Never probe the electrical connectors on air bag, safety canopy or side air curtain modules. Failure to follow this instruction may result in the accidental deployment of these modules, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death.
NOTE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when taking measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
NOTE: Most faults are due to connector and/or wiring concerns. Carry out a thorough inspection and verification before proceeding with the pinpoint test.
NOTE: The supplemental restraint system (SRS) must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.

    • Is the resistance less than 0.5 ohm?
    1. YES  : Go to  B5.
    2. NO  : REPAIR circuit RR116 (BN/GN). Go to  B9.
  5. B5 CHECK CIRCUIT CBP46 (WH/BU) FOR AN OPEN
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between PAD indicator C2286-1, circuit CBP46 (WH/BU), harness side and ground.
    • Fig 4: Measuring Voltage
      GF0041938Courtesy of FORD MOTOR CO.
    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
    1. YES  : Go to  B6.
    2. NO  : VERIFY smart power distribution junction box (SPDJB) fuse 46 (7.5A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR circuit CBP46 (WH/BU). Go to  B9.
  6. B6 CHECK THE PAD INDICATOR LAMP
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Deactivate the SRS. Refer to Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Deactivation and Reactivation .
    • Connect: PAD Indicator C2286
    • Key in ON position.
    • Connect a fused jumper wire between RCM C2041a-22, circuit RR116 (BN/GN), harness side and ground.
    • Fig 5: Checking PAD Indicator Lamp

    • Does the PAD indicator illuminate?
    1. YES  : Go to  B7.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new PAD indicator. Go to  B9.
  7. B7 CONFIRM THE RCM FAULT
NOTE: Make sure all restraint system sensor electrical connectors and the restraints control module (RCM) electrical connectors are connected before carrying out the on-demand self test. If not, erroneous DTCs will be recorded.
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new RCM. REFER to Restraints Control Module (RCM) . Go to  B9.
    2. NO  : In the process of diagnosing the fault, the fault condition has become intermittent. CHECK for causes of the intermittent fault in the areas previously worked in, particularly the pins and terminals of electrical connectors that were disconnected. ATTEMPT to recreate the hard fault by flexing the wire harness and cycling the ignition key frequently. Do not install any new SRS components at this time. SRS components should only be installed when directed to do so in the pinpoint test.  REPAIR any intermittent wiring, terminal or connector concerns found. Go to  B8.
  8. B8 CHECK FOR AN INTERMITTENT FAULT
    • Key in OFF position.

    • Was on-demand DTC B1884 retrieved?
    1. YES  : This is a hard fault. The fault condition is now present. This fault cannot be cleared until it is corrected and the DTC is no longer retrieved during the on-demand self test.

If the PAD indicator is illuminated continuously  , go to  B2.

If the PAD indicator does not illuminate  , go to  B4.

    2. NO  : CHECK for causes of intermittent open or short to ground on circuit RR116 (BN/GN). ATTEMPT to recreate the hard fault by flexing the wire harness and cycling the ignition key frequently. ACTIVATE other systems in the same wire harness. Do not install any new SRS components at this time. SRS components should only be installed when directed to do so in the pinpoint test.  REPAIR any intermittent wiring, terminal or connector concerns found. Go to  B9.
