Pinpoint Test F: The Heated Seats Are Inoperative

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2008 Mercury Mariner and 2008 Ford Escape. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: The air bag warning indicator illuminates when the restraint control module (RCM) fuse is removed and the key is in the ON position. This is normal operation and does not indicate an supplemental restraint system (SRS) fault.
NOTE: The SRS must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.
  1. F1 CHECK THE HEATED SEAT INDICATORS 
    • Start the engine.
    • Press both heated seat switches to on.
    • Do both heated seat switch indicators illuminate? 
    1. YES  : Go to  F2.
    2. NO  : Key OFF and DISASSEMBLE as necessary to disconnect all of the HVAC module electrical connectors. WAIT one minute to allow the system to reset and RECONNECT the electrical connectors. RETEST the system. If the heated seat indicator still does not illuminate, INSTALL a new HVAC module. REFER to CLIMATE CONTROL article. TEST the system for normal operation.
  2. F2 CHECK THE CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM FOR DTCs 
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Self Test/ HVAC module/ Retrieve DTCs
    • Are any DTCs retrieved? 
    1. YES  : If DTC B12AC is present, go to Pinpoint Test G .

      If DTC B12AE is present, go to Pinpoint Test H .

      For any other DTC, REFER to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES article to diagnose the fault.

    2. NO  : Go to  F3.
  3. F3 CHECK THE HEATED SEAT RELAY FOR VOLTAGE 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Depower the SRS. Refer to Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering in the General Procedures portion of SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
    • Disconnect: Driver Seat Side Air Bag C367 or Passenger Seat Side Air Bag C337
    • Disconnect: Driver Safety Belt Buckle Pretensioner C3201 or Passenger Safety Belt Buckle Pretensioner C3202
    • Disconnect: Driver Heated Seat Relay C3250 or Passenger Heated Seat Relay C3251
      • WARNING: Make sure no one is in the vehicle and there is nothing blocking or placed in front of any air bag module when the battery is connected. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
    • Connect the battery ground cable. Refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES article.
    • Start the engine.
    • Measure the voltage between driver heated seat relay C3250-30 circuit SBP18 (YE/RD), harness side and ground or passenger heated seat relay C3251-30 circuit SBP18 (YE/RD), harness side and ground; and between driver heated seat relay C3250-86 circuit CBP43 (GY), harness side and ground or passenger heated seat relay C3251-86 circuit CBP43 (GY), harness side and ground.

    • Are the voltages greater than 10 volts? 
    1. YES  : Go to  F4.
    2. NO  : VERIFY smart junction box (SJB) fuses 18 (20A) and 43 (10A) are OK. If SJB fuse 18 (20A) is open, go to  F5. If OK, REPAIR the affected circuit SBP18 (YE/RD), or CBP43 (GY). TEST the system for normal operation.

      DISCONNECT the battery ground cable. CONNECT driver seat safety belt buckle pretensioner C3201 or passenger seat safety belt buckle pretensioner C3202 and driver seat side air bag C367 or passenger seat side air bag C337.

      REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.

  4. F4 CHECK FOR AN OPEN GROUND CIRCUIT 
    • Disconnect: Driver Cushion Heater Mat C3283 or Passenger Cushion Heater Mat C3284
    • Measure the resistance between driver seat cushion heater mat C3283-1 circuit GD182 (BK/GY), harness side and ground or between passenger seat cushion heater mat C3284-1 circuit GD182 (BK/GY), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new HVAC module. REFER to CLIMATE CONTROL article. TEST the system for normal operation.

      DISCONNECT the battery ground cable. CONNECT driver seat safety belt buckle pretensioner C3201 or passenger seat safety belt buckle pretensioner C3202 and driver seat side air bag C367 or passenger seat side air bag C337.

      REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.

    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

      DISCONNECT the battery ground cable. CONNECT driver seat safety belt buckle pretensioner C3201 or passenger seat safety belt buckle pretensioner C3202 and driver seat side air bag C367 or passenger seat side air bag C337.

      REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.

  5. F5 CHECK HEATER CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Driver Cushion Heater Mat C3283 and Passenger Cushion Heater Mat C3284
    • Measure the resistance between driver heated seat relay C3250-87 circuit CHS11 (VT/GN), harness side and ground; and between passenger heated seat relay C3251-87 circuit CHS12 (YE/GN), harness side and ground.

    • Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  F6.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the affected circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

      DISCONNECT the battery ground cable. CONNECT driver seat safety belt buckle pretensioner C3201 or passenger seat safety belt buckle pretensioner C3202 and driver seat side air bag C367 or passenger seat side air bag C337.

      REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.

  6. F6 CHECK THE HEATER MATS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Disconnect: Driver and Passenger Backrest Heater Mat Electrical Connectors
    • Measure the resistance between driver cushion heater mat C3283 pin 1, component side and ground; and between driver cushion heater mat C3283 pin 2, component side and ground; and between passenger cushion heater mat C3284 pin 1, component side and ground; and between passenger cushion heater mat C3284 pin 1, component side and ground.

    • Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new backrest heater mat. TEST the system for normal operation.

      DISCONNECT the battery ground cable. CONNECT driver seat safety belt buckle pretensioner C3201 or passenger seat safety belt buckle pretensioner C3202 and driver seat side air bag C367 or passenger seat side air bag C337.

      REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.

    2. NO  : INSTALL a new cushion heater mat. TEST the system for normal operation.

      DISCONNECT the battery ground cable. CONNECT driver seat safety belt buckle pretensioner C3201 or passenger seat safety belt buckle pretensioner C3202 and driver seat side air bag C367 or passenger seat side air bag C337.

      REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
