Calipers & Pads: Removal

NOTE:
To prevent master cylinder overflow when caliper piston is depressed, remove and discard some brake fluid from master cylinder.
- Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel.
- Remove the front brake hose bolt (if necessary). Disconnect the front brake hose. Remove and discard the copper washers. Plug the front brake hose. See Fig 1.
- If installing new pads, the caliper pistons must be compressed using a "C" clamp and a wooden block. See Fig 2. Tighten clamp to bottom piston in cylinder bore. Remove clamp.
- Remove caliper pin bolts. See Fig 3. Remove caliper from rotor. Remove brake pads. Remove and discard the stainless anti-rattle clips. Check brake pad wear. See DISC & DRUM BRAKE SPECIFICATIONS . Do not remove the anchor pins unless installing new pins.
- Inspect the disc brake caliper for leaks. See Fig 4. If leaks are found, disassembly is required. See DISC BRAKE CALIPER under OVERHAUL.
NOTE:
Stainless anti-rattle clips may also be referred to as stainless steel slippers.
