Master Cylinder Bleeding (On-Vehicle)

  1. Using a line wrench, remove front brake tube and master cylinder outlet rear tube from master cylinder.
  2. Install short brake tubes in master cylinder and position them so they curve into master cylinder reservoir, and ends of tubes are submerged in brake fluid. See Figure.
  3. Fill master cylinder reservoir with clean brake fluid.
  4. For a new brake master cylinder, loosen the speed control deactivator switch. See Figure. Have an assistant slowly pump brakes and hold the brake pedal. Tighten the speed control deactivator switch.
  5. Have an assistant slowly pump the brake pedal until clear brake fluid flows from both brake tubes with no air bubbles.
  6. Remove short brake tubes and reinstall front brake tube and master cylinder inlet rear tube on master cylinder. Bleed each brake tube at master cylinder by having and assistant depress and hold the brake pedal.
  7. Loosen rearmost brake tube fittings until a stream of brake fluid comes out. Have an assistant maintain pressure on brake pedal until brake tube fitting is tightened again.
  8. Repeat procedure until clear, bubble-free fluid comes out from around tube fitting. Refill master cylinder reservoir as necessary. Repeat this bleeding operation at front brake tube fitting.
  9. Loosen a brake outlet tube at the 4WABS Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU). See Figure.
  10. Have an assistant depress and hold the brake pedal. Tighten the outlet tube fitting at the HCU.
  11. Repeat procedure until clear, bubble-free fluid comes out from around tube fitting. Refill master cylinder reservoir as necessary. Repeat this bleeding operation at for the remaining HCU tubes.
  12. Connect one end of a flexible tube to the master cylinder bleeder screw. Submerge the other end in a container partially filled with the specified brake fluid.
  13. Have an assistant pump and then hold firm pressure on the brake pedal.
  14. Loosen the master cylinder bleeder screw until brake fluid flows out of the drain tube.
  15. Tighten the master cylinder bleeder screw.
