4-Wheel Anti-Lock Brake Hydraulic Control Unit

NOTE: This procedure only needs to be carried out if a new 4-Wheel Anti-Lock Brake System (4WABS) Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU) has been installed.
  1. Connect the scan tool Data Communication Link (DCL) cable adapter into the vehicle Data Link Connector (DLC) located under the dash, and follow the scan tool instructions for bleeding.
  2. Clean all dirt from and remove the brake master cylinder filler cap, and fill the brake master cylinder reservoir with the specified brake fluid.
  3. Have an assistant pump and then hold firm pressure on the brake pedal. Loosen a brake outlet tube at the 4WABS Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU). See Fig 1. Tighten the outlet tube fitting at the HCU.
  4. Repeat the procedures until no air bubbles are visible in the expelled brake fluid. Repeat the procedure for the remaining HCU outlet tubes.
  5. Connect one end of a flexible tube to the master cylinder bleeder screw. Submerge the other end in a container partially filled with the specified brake fluid.
  6. Have an assistant pump and then hold firm pressure on the brake pedal. Loosen the master cylinder bleeder screw until brake fluid flows out of the drain tube.
  7. Tighten the master cylinder bleeder screw. Repeat until there are no air bubbles in the expelled brake fluid.
  8. Connect a clear drain tube to the right rear bleeder screw and the other end in a container partially filled with recommended brake fluid.
  9. Have an assistant pump the brake pedal and then hold firm pressure on the brake pedal.
  10. Loosen the master cylinder bleeder screw until brake fluid flows out of the drain tube. While the assistant maintains pressure on the brake pedal, tighten the bleeder screw. Repeat until clear, bubble-free fluid comes out. Refill the brake master cylinder reservoir as necessary.
  11. Bleed the brake system. See SYSTEM BLEEDING .
