Removal (Escape)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 26 other vehicles, including the 2001 Mercury Villager, 2001 Mercury Mountaineer, 2001 Ford RV Cutaway, 2001 Ford Pickup, and 2001 Ford Explorer. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect battery. Remove battery and battery tray. Disconnect air intake tube and Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. Remove air cleaner assembly. Disconnect Transmission Range (TR) sensor and Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S). Disconnect harness connector and remove wire harness.
  2. Disconnect vent hose from transmission fill tube bracket. Disconnect gearshift cable and remove bracket. Disconnect starter wire harness. Disconnect ground wire. Remove starter.
  3. Install appropriate 3-bar engine support. Remove upper transaxle retaining bolts. Remove upper left transaxle mount plate. Remove rear transaxle mount. Remove right side engine mount bolt. Raise and support vehicle.
  4. Remove front wheels. Remove splash shields. Drain transaxle. Mark (scribe) mounting bracket studs and intermediate shaft bearing bracket. Remove axle shafts. See appropriate FWD AXLE SHAFTS article in DRIVE AXLES.
  5. Remove cross brace. Install Exhaust Holder (T94T-6000-AH). Disconnect front and rear exhaust pipe flanges. Remove exhaust pipe. Remove rear drive shaft, if equipped. On 4WD models, remove right side exhaust manifold. Remove Power Transfer Unit (PTU) vent tube.
  6. On all models, lower vehicle. Install engine lift chain. Lower transaxle slightly to clear subframe. Raise and support vehicle. Remove torque converter access cover. Place reference marks on torque converter and drive plate for reassembly reference. Remove torque converter-to-drive plate nuts. Disconnect Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor and Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) sensor. Remove fluid cooler tube. Remove Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor.
  7. CAUTION: Torque converter is heavy. Install torque converter holder before lowering transaxle from vehicle.
  8. Support transaxle with transmission jack. Remove vent tube. Remove transaxle mount bolts. Separate transaxle and engine enough to install Torque Converter Holder (T97T-7902-A). Lower transaxle from vehicle with PTU attached, if equipped.
