Removal (Windstar)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 26 other vehicles, including the 2001 Mercury Villager, 2001 Mercury Mountaineer, 2001 Ford RV Cutaway, 2001 Ford Pickup, and 2001 Ford Explorer. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect battery. Remove battery and battery tray. Remove air cleaner assembly. Disconnect Transmission Range (TR) sensor and all other transaxle electrical connectors. Disconnect gearshift cable from transaxle, and remove from bracket. Remove vehicle hood. Remove wiper arm and pivot assembly. Remove upper radiator shield.
  2. On 3.8L models, install special Lifting Hooks (303-D095 and 303-290-08). On 3.0L models, install special Lifting Hook (303-D119). On all models, disconnect oil cooler lines from transaxle, and plug openings. Disconnect wiring harness bracket from transaxle. With appropriate brackets installed, install 3-Bar Engine Support (014-00750) and Adapter Kit (014-00792). Remove upper fluid filler tube.
  3. Remove clips from cooler lines at transaxle case. Remove cooler lines from transaxle. Remove upper transaxle-to-engine bolts. Remove rear transaxle mount nut. Raise and support vehicle. Drain transmission fluid. Remove front wheels. Remove axle shafts. See appropriate FWD AXLE SHAFTS article in DRIVE AXLES. Disconnect oxygen sensor. Remove 3-way catalytic converter assembly. Remove ground strap. Install Engine Holding Tool (303-290A-11). Disconnect steering shaft from steering gear.
  4. Remove starter assembly, and position away from transaxle. Remove torque converter inspection cover. Place reference marks on torque converter and drive plate for reassembly reference. Remove and discard 4 torque converter-to-drive plate nuts. Disconnect Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor and Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) sensor connectors. Disconnect front stabilizer links from stabilizer bar. Disconnect outer tie rod ends and ball joints from steering knuckles.
  5. NOTE: Mark (scribe) positions of subframe mount washers onto body, or wheel toe-in and steering geometry may be affected.
  6. Remove engine mount-to-subframe nuts. Support subframe with Hi-Lift Jack (014-00210) and Subframe Removal Kit (014-00751). Mark positions of subframe mount washers, remove 2 rear subframe-to-body bolts, and carefully disconnect power steering lines from steering gear assembly. Remove 2 front subframe-to-body bolts and lower subframe from vehicle.
  7. Support transaxle with transmission jack. Remove remaining transaxle-to-engine bolts at bellhousing and near right side axle seal. Carefully lower transaxle from vehicle.
