Rear Brake Rotor: Installation

  1. To install, reverse removal procedure.
  2. Position the rear brake disc on the rear hub and install the bolts.
  3. CAUTION: Lightly coat the spindle and pack each rear wheel bearing with Premium Long-Life Grease XG-1-C or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESA-M1C75-B.
  4. Thoroughly clean the spindle. Coat the spindle and hub seal inside diameter with axle lubricant. Wrap the spindle threads with electrician's tape to prevent damage while installing the rear hub and brake disc assembly.
  5. Using extreme care not to damage the hub seal by allowing it to contact the spindle during installation.
  6. On Ford axles, fill the hub cavity with 1 oz. (29.6 ml) of axle lubricant. See Fig 1.
  7. On all models, push the rear hub and outer bearing onto the spindle as an assembly. Hold the outer bearing seated and use the bearing as a pilot.
  8. Start the hub nut making sure that the tab aligns correctly in the keyway prior to thread engagement. See Fig 2.
  9. NOTE: The following hub nut tightening sequence will prevent side-to-side end play of the hub and brake disc assembly. Apply inward pressure to the socket to separate the ratcheting components of the hub nut.
  10. To adjust the bearings, on Dana axles, tighten the nut to 70 Ft. Lbs (95 N.m). Back off the nut 90 degrees.
  11. Tighten the nut to 18 Ft. Lbs (24 N.m).
    • To verify that there is no side-to-side end play, attach a magnetically mounted dial indicator to the spindle end and place the dial indicator tip on the outboard surface of the hub. Check for side-to-side end play.
    • Final bearing adjustment has zero end play. The maximum torque to rotate the hub is 20 INCH Lbs. (2.3 N.m) when end play is zero.
  12. On Ford axles, while rotating the hub, tighten hub nut using the wheel hub nut socket, to 60 Ft. Lbs. (81 N.m). The hub nut will ratchet as torque is applied.
  13. Adjust hub nuts as follows:
    • For new bearings, ratchet back 5 teeth or notches (1/8 turn) on the hub nut. 5 notches must be felt during this operation in order to have performed it correctly.
    • For used bearings, ratchet back 7 teeth or notches (1/6 turn) on the hub nut. 7 notches must be felt during this operation to have performed it correctly.
  14. CAUTION: Dana and Ford dual rear wheel axles are used. On Ford axles, hub nut is right-hand thread on passenger side (nut stamped "RH"), and left-hand thread on driver side (nut stamped "LH").
  15. On all models, lubricate "O" ring seal with lubricant. Install NEW hub seal. Install axle shaft. See Figure.
  16. On Ford axles, coat the threads of the retaining bolts with Stud and Bearing Mount (E0AZ-19554-BA) or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSK-M2G349-A1. Install and tighten the retaining bolts until they seat.
  17. Install the wheels and tires but do not tighten the lug nuts to specification at this time.
  18. Check the axle lubricant level. Fill as necessary.
  19. Lower the vehicle and tighten the wheel lug nuts.
  20. Tighten the axle shaft retaining bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
