  • The message center is not operating correctly

  • VERIFY that the message center display mode is turned on, then CARRY OUT the instrument cluster self-diagnostic test to illuminate all segments of the message center display. If the message center display is illuminated, the system is working correctly at this time.
    • If the message center display is inoperative, INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER article. TEST the system for normal operation.
  • The message center switch does not operate correctly

  • Instrument cluster
  • The TURN SIGNAL ON warning is inoperative
  • Turn signals

  • The SPEED CONTROL ON warning is inoperative (Hybrid)

  • The SERVICE BRAKE SYSTEM warning is inoperative

  • Smart junction box (SJB)
  • CHECK the correct operation of the stoplamps.
    • If the stoplamps operate correctly, INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER article. TEST the system for normal operation.
    • If the stoplamps do not operate correctly, REFER to EXTERIOR LIGHTING article to continue diagnosis of the stoplamps.
  • The SERVICE EMISSION SYSTEM warning is inoperative
  • Circuitry
  • Powertrain control module (PCM)
  • Instrument cluster
  • RETRIEVE the PCM DTCs. If PCM DTCs are retrieved, REFER to the Introduction - Gasoline Engines article to continue diagnosis.
    • If no DTCs are retrieved, INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER article. TEST the system for normal operation.
  • The high engine temperature, high engine temperature with performance reduced, and high engine temperature with stop engine safely warning is inoperative (Escape, Mariner)
  • Circuitry
  • Engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor
  • PCM
  • Instrument cluster
  • TURN the ignition switch to the RUN position and OBSERVE the operation of the engine temperature gauge.
    • If the engine temperature gauge operates correctly, INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER article. TEST the system for normal operation.
    • If the engine temperature gauge does not operate correctly, REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER article to continue diagnosis of the engine temperature gauge.
  • The high engine temperature, high engine temperature with performance reduced, and high engine temperature with stop engine safely warning is inoperative (Hybrid)
  • Circuitry
  • ECT sensor
  • PCM
  • Instrument cluster
  • CHECK if the overtemp warning indicator is illuminated.
    • If the overtemp warning indicator is illuminated, INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER article. TEST the system for normal operation.
    • If the overtemp warning indicator is not illuminated, RETRIEVE the PCM DTCs. If PCM DTCs are retrieved, REFER to the Introduction - Gasoline Engines article to continue diagnosis.
    • If no PCM DTCs are retrieved, INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER article. TEST the system for normal operation.
  • The SERVICE 4x4 warning is inoperative (Escape, Mariner)
  • Four-wheel drive (4WD) system
  • The PARK BRAKE ON warning is inoperative
  • Circuitry
  • Parking brake switch
  • SJB
  • Instrument cluster
  • CHECK the operation of the brake warning indicator.
    • If the brake warning indicator operates correctly, INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER article. TEST the system for normal operation.
    • If the brake warning indicator does not operate correctly, REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER article to continue diagnosis of the brake warning indicator.
  • The LOW BRAKE FLUID warning is inoperative
  • Circuitry
  • Anti-lock brake system (ABS) module
  • Instrument cluster
  • CHECK the operation of the brake warning indicator.
    • If the brake warning indicator operates correctly, INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER article. TEST the system for normal operation.
    • If the brake warning indicator does not operate correctly, REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER article to continue diagnosis of the brake warning indicator.
  • The door ajar warning is inoperative
  • Door ajar switch
  • SJB
  • Instrument cluster
  • TURN the ignition switch to the ON position and CHECK the operation of the interior lamps.
    • If the interior lamps operate correctly, INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER article. TEST the system for normal operation.
    • If the interior lamps do not operate correctly, REFER to INTERIOR LIGHTING article to continue diagnosis of the interior lamps.
  • The LOW FUEL level warning is inoperative
  • Circuitry
  • Instrument cluster
  • CHECK the operation of the fuel gauge.
    • If the fuel gauge operates correctly, INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER article. TEST the system for normal operation.
    • If the fuel gauge does not operate correctly, REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER article to continue diagnosis of the fuel gauge.
  • The check exterior lamps warning is inoperative
  • SJB
  • Instrument cluster
  • VERIFY that the SJB is correctly configured for the lamp outage. REFER to MODULE CONFIGURATION article.
  • CHECK the operation of the exterior lamps.
    • If all of the exterior lamps operate correctly, INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER article. TEST the system for normal operation.
    • If any exterior lamp does not operate correctly, REFER to EXTERIOR LIGHTING article to continue diagnosis of the exterior lamps.
  • The CHECK FUEL CAP warning is inoperative
  • PCM
  • Instrument cluster
  • RETRIEVE the DTCs.
    • If no DTCs are retrieved, INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER article. TEST the system for normal operation.
  • The low tire monitor fault, or tire sensor fault warning is inoperative
  • Circuitry
  • SJB
  • Instrument cluster
  • OBSERVE the operation of the low tire pressure warning indicator.
    • If the low tire pressure warning indicator operates correctly, INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER article. TEST the system for normal operation.
    • If the low tire pressure warning indicator does not operate correctly, REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER article to continue diagnosis of the low tire pressure warning indicator.
  • The compass is inoperative
