Disc Brake Caliper: Disassembly
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Ford Escape, 2003 Ford Escape, and 2002 Ford Escape. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Remove caliper. See DISC BRAKE CALIPERS & PADS under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Drain fluid from caliper. Secure caliper in a vise. Place a block of wood between caliper and piston. See Fig 1 .
- Apply low air pressure to brake hose inlet. Air pressure forces piston outward.
- If piston is jammed or seized and does not come out easily, use a brass hammer to lightly tap caliper while applying air pressure. Do not pry piston from bore. After piston comes out, remove dust boot and seal using a plastic or wooden pick. Discard seals and boots.
WARNING:
DO NOT place fingers between wood and piston as piston leaves caliper.
