Pinpoint Test A: The Parking Brake Does Not Apply

  1. A1 CHECK FOR MISADJUSTED PARKING BRAKE CABLE 
    1. YES  : Vehicle OK.
    2. NO  : If equipped with rear drum brakes, go to  A2 .
    3. If equipped with rear disc brakes, go to  A3 .
  2. A2 CHECK FOR WORN BRAKE SHOES 
    • Inspect the brake shoes for excessive wear.
    • Are the brake shoes OK? 
    1. YES  : Go to  A4.
    2. NO  : INSTALL new brake shoes. REFER to DRUM BRAKE article. TEST the system for normal operation.
  3. A3 CHECK FOR WORN PARKING BRAKE SHOES 
    • Inspect the parking brake shoes for excessive wear.
    • Are the parking brake shoes OK? 
    1. YES  : Go to  A4.
    2. NO  : INSTALL new parking brake shoes. REFER to Parking Brake Shoes . TEST the system for normal operation.
  4. A4 CHECK FOR DAMAGED PARKING BRAKE CABLES 
    • Inspect the parking brake cables and conduit for damage, rust or fraying.
    • Are the parking brake cables OK? 
    1. YES  : CHECK for other causes such as loose parking brake control or conventional brake system components.
    2. NO  : REPAIR or INSTALL new cables as necessary. REFER to Parking Brake Cable - Front  or Parking Brake Cable - Rear . TEST the system for normal operation.
