Removal & Installation (Parking Brake Shoes Except E450 & E550)

  1. On E250 and E350, remove hub assembly. See HUB ASSEMBLY (E250 & E350) .
  2. On all vehicles, raise and support vehicle. Remove rear wheels. Remove rear rotor. See REAR BRAKE ROTOR .
  3. Remove the brake shoe retracting spring. See Fig 1.
  4. Remove the brake shoe hold-down springs.
  5. Pull the primary shoe forward and out. Pull the secondary shoe rearward and remove the parking brake shoes and set on bench.
  6. Remove the brake shoe inner retracting spring.
  7. Remove the brake adjusting screw.
  8. Remove the brake shoe adjusting screw spring.
  9. To install, reverse removal procedure. Lubricate the brake shoe contact point before installation of the parking brake shoes using silicone brake caliper grease.
  10. Use Brake Adjusting Gauge (D81L-1103-A), or equivalent, to measure the inside diameter of the drum portion of the rear brake disc.
  11. Use Brake Adjusting Gauge to set the rear brake shoe and lining diameter to 0.02" (0.5 mm) less than the inside diameter of the drum portion of the brake disc.
  12. Burnish the parking brake shoe and linings:
    • Accelerate the vehicle to 25 MPH.
    • Shift the transmission to Neutral.
    • Slowly apply the parking brake control to approximately one-half to three-quarters of its travel.
    • Allow the vehicle to come to a complete stop.
    • Release the parking brake.
  13. Verify parking brake operation.
