Removal & Installation (Control)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 14 other vehicles, including the 2004 Ford RV Cutaway, 2004 Ford Econoline, 2004 Ford E450 Super Duty, 2004 Ford Cutaway, and 2003 Ford RV Cutaway. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. On all models except E450 and E550, relieve the tension on the parking brake system. Pull down on the parking brake intermediate cable. Insert a 0.16" (4 mm) drill bit or equivalent retainer in the parking brake control. See Fig 1.
  2. On E450 and E550, disconnect negative battery cable. With vehicle in Neutral, raise and support vehicle on a hoist.
  3. Disconnect the front parking brake cable and conduit from the parking brake lever. Disconnect the parking brake lever return spring from the clevis pin. Remove the locking pin from the clevis pin and remove the clevis pin. See Fig 2.
  4. On all models, remove the left cowl side trim panel.
  5. Disconnect the electrical connector from the parking brake signal switch and bracket. See Fig 3.
  6. Remove three parking brake control nuts and separate the parking brake control from the steering column support bracket. See Fig 4 or Fig 5 .
  7. Remove the cable end retainer from the parking brake control. See Fig 6.
  8. Remove the front parking brake cable and conduit. Using box wrench, compress the fingers of the parking brake cable retainer. See Fig 7. Pull the front parking brake cable and conduit from the parking brake control.
  9. To install, reverse removal procedures. On E450 and E550 models, adjust cable tension. See PARKING BRAKE  under ADJUSTMENTS.
