Four Wheel Anti-Lock Brake System Hydraulic Control Unit

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 14 other vehicles, including the 2004 Ford RV Cutaway, 2004 Ford Econoline, 2004 Ford E450 Super Duty, 2004 Ford Cutaway, and 2003 Ford RV Cutaway. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: This procedure only needs to be carried out if a new 4-wheel Anti-Lock Brake (4WABS) Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU) has been installed or if the HCU lines have been opened.
  1. Clean all dirt from and remove the brake master cylinder filler cap. Fill the brake master cylinder reservoir with the specified brake fluid.
  2. Connect a clear waste line to the right rear bleeder screw and submerge the other end in a container partially filled with the recommended brake fluid.
  3. Loosen the right rear bleeder screw until a stream of brake fluid comes out. While the assistant maintains pressure on the brake pedal, tighten the right rear bleeder screw. Repeat until clear, bubble-free fluid comes out. Refill the brake master cylinder reservoir as necessary.
  4. Tighten the rear bleeder screw, and disconnect the waste line.
  5. Tighten the front bleeder screw.
  6. Repeat procedure for the left rear bleeder screw, the right front disc brake caliper bleeder screw, and the left front disc brake caliper bleeder screw, in that order.
  7. Connect the diagnostic tool Data Communication Link (DCL) cable adapter into the vehicle DLC under the dash, and follow the diagnostic tool instructions.
  8. Repeat the system bleed procedure.
