Bleeding Hydro-Boost Unit: E550

CAUTION: If the air is not purged from the power steering system correctly, premature power steering pump failure can result. The condition can occur on pre-delivery vehicles with evidence of aerated fluid or on vehicles that have had steering component repairs. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
NOTE: A whine heard from the power steering pump can be caused by air in the system. The power steering purge procedure must be carried out prior to any component repair for which power steering noise complaints are accompanied by evidence of aerated fluid.
  1. Remove the reservoir cap. Check the fluid. Use Motorcraft MERCON® Multi-Purpose ATF XT-2-QDX or MERCON® equivalent.
  2. Raise and support the front wheels.
  3. Tightly insert the stopper of the vacuum pump into the reservoir.
  4. Start the vehicle.
  5. Apply maximum vacuum, 20-25 in. Hg (68-85 kPa).
    6. CAUTION: Do not hold the steering wheel against the stops for more than 3 to 5 seconds at a time. Damage to the power steering pump can occur.
  6. Cycle the steering wheel fully from stop to stop 10 times.
  7. Stop the engine.
    8. CAUTION: Do not over fill the reservoir.
  8. Fill the reservoir. Use Motorcraft MERCON® Multi-Purpose ATF XT-2-QDX or MERCON® equivalent.
  9. Release the vacuum and remove the vacuum pump.
  10. Fill the reservoir. Start the vehicle.
  11. Reinstall the vacuum pump. Apply and maintain maximum vacuum.
    12. CAUTION: Do not hold the steering wheel against the stops for more than three to five seconds at a time. Damage to the power steering pump could occur.
  12. Cycle the steering wheel fully from stop to stop 10 times.
  13. Stop the engine, release the vacuum, and remove the vacuum pump.
  14. Install the reservoir cap.
  15. Check for fluid leaks at all of the connections. If the power steering fluid shows signs of air, repeat procedure.
