Pinpoint Test I: The AUTOLAMPS Are On Continuously

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2007 Mercury Mariner and 2007 Ford Escape. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
  1. I1 USE THE RECORDED DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCs) FROM THE SJB SELF-TEST
    • Using the recorded results from the SJB self-test:
    • Were any DTCs recorded?
    1. YES  : For DTC B1696, go to  I2 .

      For DTC B1791 or B1793, go to  I4 .

For all other DTCs, REFER to the Smart Junction Box (SJB) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index for correct diagnostics.

    2. NO  : Go to  I4.
  2. I2 CHECK THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Multifunction Switch C2080
    • Key in ON position.
    • Repeat the SJB self-test.
    • Is DTC B1696 retrieved again?
    1. YES  : Go to  I3.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new multifunction switch. REFER to STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  3. I3 CHECK CIRCUIT 1399 (DB/WH) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: SJB C2280e
    • Fig 1: Checking Circuit For Short To Ground

    • Measure the resistance between the multifunction switch C2080-14, circuit 1399 (DB/WH), harness side and ground.
    • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
    1. YES  : Go to  I8.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  4. I4 CHECK CIRCUIT 570 (BK/WH) FOR AN OPEN
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Light Sensor C287
    • Fig 2: Checking Circuit For Open
      GF0025967Courtesy of FORD MOTOR CO.
    • Measure the resistance between the light sensor C287-B, circuit 570 (BK/WH), harness side and ground.
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
    1. YES  : Go to  I5.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  5. I5 CHECK CIRCUIT 7 (LG/YE) FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
    • Disconnect: SJB C2280e
    • Key in ON position.
    • Fig 3: Checking Circuit For Short To Voltage

    • Measure the voltage between the light sensor C287-C, circuit 7 (LG/YE), harness side and ground.
    • Is any voltage present?
    1. YES  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    2. NO  : Go to  I6.
  6. I6 CHECK CIRCUIT 7 (LG/YE) FOR AN OPEN
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Fig 4: Checking Circuit For Open
      GF0025968Courtesy of FORD MOTOR CO.
    • Measure the resistance between the light sensor C287-C, circuit 7 (LG/YE), harness side and the SJB C2280e-2, circuit 7 (LG/YE), harness side.
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
    1. YES  : Go to  I7.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  7. I7 CHECK THE LIGHT SENSOR
    • Connect: SJB C2280e
    • Key in ON position.
    • Fig 5: Checking Circuit For Voltage

    • Measure the voltage between the light sensor C287-C, circuit 7 (LG/YE), harness side and ground.
    • Is the voltage approximately 5 volts?
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new light sensor. REFER to Light Sensor . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    2. NO  : Go to  I8.
  8. I8 CHECK FOR CORRECT SJB OPERATION
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect all the SJB connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • damaged pins
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all the SJB connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present?
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new SJB. REFER to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES article. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
