Fuel System Pressure Release

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Ford Pickup, 2003 Ford F550 Super Duty, 2003 Ford F450 Super Duty, 2003 Ford Excursion, and 2003 Ford Cab & Chassis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: Vehicle must be stopped with engine off when draining fuel filter water bowl. Fuel can ignite if fuel filter is drained while the engine is running or vehicle is moving. Smoking or open flame of any type must not be present when working near fuel or fuel vapor. Fuel in the fuel system remains under high pressure even when the engine is not running. Clean all fuel residue from engine compartment. Failure to do so can cause personal injury or damage to the vehicle.
NOTE: Diesel fuel can damage asphalt and other surfaces. Always place an appropriate container under the fuel filter water drain under the vehicle and dispose of the waste in accordance with all federal, state and local requirements.

Open hood and place an appropriate container under fuel filter water drain under vehicle. See Fig 1. To release fuel system pressure, open fuel filter/water separator drain valve. See Fig 2. After pressure has been released, close drain valve. Properly dispose of drained fuel.
