Removal & Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Ford Econoline. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: Smoking or open flame of any type must not be present when working near fuel or fuel vapor. Fuel in the fuel system remains under high pressure even when the engine is not running. Before repairing or disconnecting any of the fuel lines or fuel system components, the fuel system pressure must be relieved to prevent accidental spraying of fuel, causing personal injury or a fire hazard. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE  . Clean all fuel residue from engine compartment. Failure to do so can cause personal injury or damage to the vehicle.

Remove fuel filter/water separator assembly. See FUEL FILTER/WATER SEPARATOR  . Remove fuel filter cap and element. Remove thermostat screws and pull thermostat out of fuel filter/water separator housing. See Fig 1 . Disconnect fuel heater element electrical connector and retaining screws. See Fig 2 . Remove the fuel heater. To install, reverse removal procedure.
