Air Induction Systems: Turbocharger: Inspection

Turbocharger Internal Oil Leak Test

  1. Check the turbocharger compressor inlet for evidence of oil. If oil is present, this indicates that the failure is in the engine, not in the turbocharger.
  2. Check the turbocharger turbine outlet for evidence of oil. If oil is present in the outlet, remove the turbocharger from the engine and examine the oil supply and return passages in the turbocharger pedestal and engine block for restriction. If no restriction is found, install a new turbocharger. See TURBOCHARGER  .

Bearing Clearance Check & Axial End Play

  1. Disconnect air intake tube and exhaust backpressure valve from the turbocharger. Press and rotate the radial shaft, then repeat from the opposite side. If either the compressor wheel or the turbine wheel contacts the housing, the bearings are bad, and a new turbocharger must be installed. Turbine and compressor wheels must spin freely when turned by hand. No housing contact is permitted. Perform STEP 1. See Fig 1 .
  2. If compressor wheel or turbine wheel does not contact housing while rotating shaft assembly, bearings in turbocharger are okay. Install dial indicator so stem on dial indicator contacts end of shaft assembly at the compressor wheel. Perform STEP 2. See Fig 1 . Push shaft assembly as far in one direction as possible and zero dial indicator. Push shaft assembly as far in the opposite direction and note shaft end play.
  3. Replace turbocharger if shaft end play exceeds .00079-.00394" (.02-.10 mm). See TURBOCHARGER  . Check control rod tension. Install exhaust backpressure valve to turbocharger. Using the Spring Gauge, adjust the control rod length until 10 lbs. (4.5 kg) of force is required to fully close the exhaust backpressure valve. See Figure .
