Camshaft Synchronizer (4.2L): Removal

- Disconnect negative battery cable. On vehicles with dual batteries, see DUAL BATTERIES under MISCELLANEOUS. Partially drain cooling system. Rotate crankshaft until cylinder No. 1 is at Top Dead Center (TDC) of compression stroke and TDC mark lines up with timing mark. Noting position of Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor electrical connector, remove CMP sensor. See CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR .
- Disconnect Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve vacuum hose. Remove EGR valve tube upper fitting. Remove EGR valve and adapter nut/bolts and remove EGR valve and adapter assembly. See Figure.
- Disconnect coolant hose(s) from water outlet tube and position tube out of the way. Remove camshaft synchronizer retaining bolt. Apply reference marks on camshaft synchronizer assembly and engine. Remove camshaft synchronizer assembly hold-down bolt and clamp. Remove camshaft synchronizer assembly. Oil pump drive shaft may come out with synchronizer. Retrieve oil pump driveshaft before proceeding, if necessary.
