Valve Spring, Retainer, and Seal: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2007 Mercury Mariner and 2007 Ford Escape. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove the camshaft roller followers. For additional information, refer to Camshaft Roller Follower .
  2. NOTE: If air pressure has forced the piston to the bottom of the cylinder, any loss of air pressure will allow the valve(s) to fall into the cylinder. A rubber band, tape or string wrapped around the end of the valve stem will prevent this from happening.
  3. Pressurize the cylinder using compressed air.
  4. Using the special tool, remove the key, retainer and the valve spring.
