Inspection and Verification: Notes

  1. Verify the customer concern.
  2. Visually inspect the following for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.
    VISUAL INSPECTION CHART

    Mechanical Electrical
    • Engine oil level
    • Door adjustment
    • Engine coolant level
    • Fuel tank(s)
    • Fuel evaporative system
    • Low alternative fuel or gasoline
    • Fuel tank(s)
    • Central junction box (CJB) fuse(s):
      • 2 (10A)
      • 33 (15A)
      • 35 (10A)
      • 41 (10A)
      • 45 (10A)
    • Miniature bulb(s)
    • Circuitry
    • Instrument cluster
  3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
    4. NOTE: Make sure to use the latest scan tool software release.
  4. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the data link connector (DLC).
    5. NOTE: The Vehicle Communication Module (VCM) LED prove-out confirms power and ground from the DLC are provided to the VCM.
  5. If the scan tool does not communicate with the VCM:
    • Check the VCM connection to the vehicle.
    • Check the scan tool connection to the VCM.
  6. If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
    • Verify the ignition key is in the ON position.
    • Verify the scan tool operation with a known good vehicle.
  7. Carry out the network test:
    • If the network test passes, retrieve and record the continuous memory DTCs.
  8. Clear the continuous DTCs and carry out the self-test diagnostics for the instrument cluster, the anti-lock brake system (ABS) module, and the restraints control module (RCM).
  9. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the Instrument Cluster Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index, the Restraints Control Module Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index or the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index. For all other DTCs, refer to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES article.
  10. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, go to Symptom Chart .
INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX

DTC Description Action
B1201 Fuel Sender Circuit Failure If equipped with a single fuel tank, go to Pinpoint Test A .
If equipped with dual tanks, go to Pinpoint Test B .
B1204 Fuel Sender Circuit Short To Ground If equipped with a single fuel tank, go to Pinpoint Test A .
If equipped with dual tanks, go to Pinpoint Test B .
B1205 EIC Switch-1 Assembly Circuit Failure CHECK for proper assembly of the outer and inner instrument cluster bezels. If the bezels are installed correctly, INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) .
If the bezels are not installed correctly, REPAIR the bezels. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
B1342 ECU is Faulted INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
B1360 Ignition Run/Acc Circuit Open Go to Pinpoint Test Y .
B2143 NVM Memory Failure Go to Pinpoint Test H .
B2658 Wait To Start Warning Indicator Circuit Open Go to Pinpoint Test S .
C1284 Oil Pressure Switch Failure Go to Pinpoint Test D .

B1869 Lamp Air Bag Warning Indicator Circuit Open Go to Pinpoint Test N .
B1870 Lamp Air Bag Warning Indicator Circuit Short to Battery Go to Pinpoint Test N .

POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX

P0623 Generator Lamp Control Circuit Go to Pinpoint Test M .
All other DTCs - REFER to INTRODUCTION -- DIESEL ENGINES or INTRODUCTION -- GASOLINE ENGINES article.
