Fuel System Pressure Release (Fuel Line Venting)

WARNING: Fuel supply lines remain pressurized after engine shutdown. Ensure no open flame of any type is present. Flammable gases may be present and ignite, resulting in possible injury. Always release (vent) fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel injection-related component downstream of fuel tank shutoff solenoids. DO NOT vent fuel system indoors.
  1. Insert grounding spike into earth. Connect grounding cable between grounding spike and fuel injection supply manifold. See Fig 1.
  2. NOTE: Running engine with Fuel Rail Pressure sensor disconnected will store a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC), which will need to be cleared after testing is complete.
  3. Turn manual lock-down valve jackscrew on each fuel tank solenoid valve. See Fig 2. Disconnect Fuel Rail Pressure (FRP) sensor electrical connector. FRP sensor is located on right side of fuel rail.
  4. Start vehicle and allow to idle until vehicle stalls. Once engine stalls, crank vehicle for an additional 15 seconds. Loosen FRP sensor on right side of fuel rail. A slight amount of fuel will leak out of FRP at this point. Tighten FRP sensor.
  5. NOTE: If system is being vented due to a Fuel Rail Pressure (FRP) sensor DTC, the FRP PID may not represent actual fuel pressure.
  6. Using NGS or equivalent scan tool, access FRP PID. If PID value is 5 psi or less, it is safe to open fuel system. If PID value is greater than 5 psi, repeat procedure until PID reads less than 5 psi.
