Trouble Shooting

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mercury Villager. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: For diagnostic procedures not listed, see POWERTRAIN in BASIC TROUBLE SHOOTING article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
NOTE: Axle shaft CV joints DO NOT need to be replaced, unless disassembly and inspection reveals unusual wear. While inspecting the CV joint boots, watch for indentations (dimples) in the CV joint boot convolutions. Indentations must be removed.

Inspect the CV joint boots for evidence of cracks, tears, or splits. Inspect the underbody for any indication of grease splatter near the CV joint boots outboard and inboard locations. This is an indication of CV joint boot or CV joint boot clamp damage.
