Hub Bearing: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mercury Villager. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove the front brake rotor. See DISC & DRUM - Villager article in BRAKES. If equipped, remove the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) sensor retaining bolt. See Fig 1 . Position the ABS sensor out of the way.
  2. Remove the tie rod cotter pin and nut. Using Tie Rod End Separator (211-105, T85M-3395-A), separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle. See Fig 2 .
  3. Remove the lower ball joint cotter pin. See Figure . Remove the lower ball joint nut. Separate the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  4. Remove the axle shaft cotter pin and remove the axle shaft hub nut. See Figure . Using the 2-Jaw Puller (205-D026, D80L-1002-L), separate the axle shaft from the steering knuckle. See Fig 3 .
  5. Remove the lower strut nuts and bolts from the steering knuckle. See Fig 4 , Fig 5 and Fig 6 . Remove the steering knuckle.
  6. Using the Bearing Puller Attachment (205-D064, D84L-1123-A), press the hub and wheel bearing out of the knuckle. See Fig 7 . Remove the brake rotor dust shield from the steering knuckle. See Fig 8 .
  7. Remove the snap ring from the steering knuckle. See Fig 9 .
  8. Using the Step Plate Adapter (205-D016, D80L-630-5), press out the inner bearing race. See Fig 10 .
