Test D: Temperature Gauge Inaccurate

NOTE: Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sender Black 2-pin harness connector 1061 (except diesel) is located on heater outlet elbow on 4.2L gasoline engine or on top of engine on all other non-diesel engines. Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sender 2-pin harness connector C1276 (diesel) is located in left front of engine compartment. For purposes of this test, both connectors will be referred to as ECT sender 2-pin harness connector.
NOTE: Ensure coolant level is correct. Verify ECT sender 2-pin harness connector is securely connected.
  1. Start engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. If temperature gauge reads hot, go to next step. If temperature gauge reads in normal operating range, check for an intermittent problem. If temperature gauge reads cold, go to step  4.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect ECT sender 2-pin harness connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If temperature gauge reads hot, go to next step. If temperature gauge does not read hot, replace ECT sender.
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster White 16-pin harness connector C220a. Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster White 16-pin harness connector C220a terminal No. 9 (Red/White wire). See Figure. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system operation. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Red/White wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
  4. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect ECT sender. Connect a 10-amp fused jumper wire between ECT sender 2-pin harness connector terminals. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If temperature gauge does not read hot or above, go to next step. If temperature gauge reads hot or above, replace ECT sender. Retest system operation.
  5. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance between ground and ECT sender 2-pin harness connector terminal No. 1 (Yellow/Red wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Yellow/Red wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
  6. Disconnect instrument cluster White 16-pin harness connector C220a. Measure resistance of Red/White wire between ECT sender terminal No. 2 and instrument cluster White 16-pin harness connector C220a terminal No. 9. See Figure. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system operation. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Red/White wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
