Exhaust Y-Pipe - Gasoline Engines: Removal

NOTE: Exhaust fasteners are of a torque prevailing design. Use only new fasteners with the same part number as the original. Torque values must be used as specified during reassembly to make sure of correct retention of exhaust components.
NOTE: Exhaust Y-pipe with dual catalytic converters shown, exhaust Y-pipe with no catalytic converters similar.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING AND LIFTING article.
  2. Disconnect the 2 heated oxygen sensors (HO2S) and the 2 catalytic monitor electrical connectors.
  3. Support the exhaust Y-pipe near the rear outlet.
  4. Remove and discard the 4 exhaust Y-pipe flange nuts, then remove and discard the gasket.

  5. NOTE: LH exhaust manifold-to-exhaust Y-pipe shown, RH similar.

  6. Remove the 4 nuts and the exhaust Y-pipe assembly.
  7. NOTE: Vehicles with dual catalytic converters in the exhaust Y-pipe have catalyst monitors in the Y-pipe. Vehicles with standard exhaust Y-pipe with no catalytic converter have a single catalyst monitor in the underbody catalytic converter.

  8. If installing a new exhaust Y-pipe with dual catalytic converters, remove the catalyst monitor sensors.
  9. If installing new exhaust Y-pipe, remove the HO2S.
