Valve Cover - RH: Removal

  1. Remove the RH ignition coils. For additional information, refer to ENGINE IGNITION - 5.4L AND 6.8L (3V) article.
  2. If equipped, remove the automatic transmission filler tube. For additional information, refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - TORQSHIFT article.
  3. Remove the throttle body (TB) adapter. For additional information, refer to FUEL CHARGING AND CONTROLS - 6.8L (3V) article.
  4. Remove the generator. For additional information, refer to GENERATOR AND REGULATOR article.
  5. Remove the cooling fan shroud. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING article.
  6. Install the special tools.

  7. CAUTION: Only use hand tools when removing the transmission mount-to-crossmember nuts or damage to the transmission mount can occur.

  8. Loosen the transmission mount-to-crossmember nuts.
  9. CAUTION: Only use hand tools when installing the RH engine mount nut or damage to the engine mount can occur.
    NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.

  10. Remove the 3 RH engine mount nuts and loosen the 3 LH engine mount nuts.
  11. Remove the 4 exhaust manifold-to-catalytic converter nuts.

  12. Disconnect the quick connect couplings and remove the evaporative emissions (EVAP) tube. For additional information, refer to FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION - GASOLINE AND DIESEL article.

  13. Disconnect the engine wiring harness retainers from the valve cover and position aside.

  14. Disconnect the quick connect coupling and remove the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) tube from the valve cover. For additional information, refer to FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION - GASOLINE AND DIESEL article.
  15. Using the special tools, raise the engine.

  16. CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.
    NOTE: The bolts are part of the valve cover and should not be removed.

  17. Loosen the 16 fasteners in the sequence shown and remove the RH valve cover and gasket.
    • Clean the valve cover mating surface of the cylinder head with silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging.
    • Discard the valve cover gasket. Clean the valve cover gasket groove with soap and water or a suitable solvent.
