Oil Pan - Automatic Transmission: Removal

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING AND LIFTING article.
  2. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube. For additional information, refer to INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION AND FILTERING article.
  3. Remove the generator. For additional information, refer to GENERATOR AND REGULATOR article.
  4. Remove the cooling fan shroud. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING article.
  5. Remove the throttle body (TB) spacer. For additional information, refer to FUEL CHARGING AND CONTROLS - 6.8L (3V) article.
  6. Drain the crankcase oil into a suitable container.
  7. Remove and discard the oil filter.

  8. Loosen the threaded shaft and position the oil cooler aside.

  9. Remove the starter. For additional information, refer to STARTING SYSTEM - GASOLINE ENGINES article.
  10. Install the special tools.

    11. CAUTION: Only use hand tools when installing the RH engine mount nut or damage to the engine mount can occur.
    NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.

  11. Remove the 6 engine mount nuts.
  12. Remove the 4 exhaust manifold-to-catalytic converter nuts.
    • To install, tighten to 40 N.m (30 lb-ft).

  13. Remove the nut and the starter wiring harness support bracket.

  14. Remove the nut and position the transmission oil cooler lines and bracket aside.

    15. CAUTION: Damage to the turbine shaft speed (TSS)/output shaft speed (OSS) sensors may occur and cause the transmission or torque converter operational concerns if the transmission is raised prior to removing TSS/OSS.
    CAUTION: Sensor bosses must be cleaned prior to removal and then plugged to prevent contamination from damaging internal components.
  15. If the vehicle is equipped with TSS and OSS sensors, remove the sensors and install plugs in the transmission. For additional information, refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - TORQSHIFT article.
    16. CAUTION: Support the transmission on the oil pan rails only or internal transmission damage can occur.
  16. Install a suitable transmission jack and raise the transmission.
  17. Position the crossmember to the transmission mount and loosely install the nut.

  18. Loosely install the 3 LH crossmember bolts.

  19. Loosely install the 2 RH crossmember bolts and nuts.

  20. Using the special tools, raise the engine.

  21. Remove the 2 bolts and the flywheel inspection plate.

  22. Remove the 18 bolts and partially lower the oil pan.
  23. Remove the 3 bolts and position the oil pump screen and pickup tube into the oil pan.
    24. NOTE: Be careful when removing the oil pan gasket. It is reusable.
  24. Remove the oil pan and the oil pump screen and pickup tube.
    • Inspect the oil pan gasket for damage.
    • If damaged, discard the oil pan gasket and the oil pan-to-oil pump gaskets.
    • Discard the oil pump screen and pickup tube O-ring seal.
