Oil Pan - Automatic Transmission: Installation

    CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges, which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.
  1. Inspect the oil pan. Clean the mating surface for the oil pan with silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging.
  2. Position the oil pump screen and pickup tube in the oil pan and position the oil pan into the vehicle.
  3. CAUTION: Make sure to install a new O-ring seal. A missing or damaged O-ring seal can cause foam in the lubrication system, low oil pressure and severe engine damage.
    NOTE: Clean and inspect the mating surfaces and install a new O-ring seal. Lubricate the O-ring seal with clean engine oil prior to installation.
  4. Position the oil pump screen and pickup tube and install the bolts.
    • Tighten the oil pump screen and pickup tube-to-oil pump bolts to 10 N.m (89 lb-in).
    • Tighten the oil pump screen and pickup tube-to-spacer bolt to 25 N.m (18 lb-ft).
  5. NOTE: If not secured within 4 minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned. To clean the sealing area, use silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging. Allow to dry until there is no sign of wetness, or 4 minutes, whichever is longer. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage.

  6. Apply silicone gasket and sealant at the crankshaft rear seal retainer plate-to-cylinder block sealing surface.
  7. NOTE: If not secured within 4 minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned. To clean the sealing area, use silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging. Allow to dry until there is no sign of wetness, or 4 minutes, whichever is longer. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage.
  8. Apply silicone gasket and sealant at the engine front cover-to-cylinder block sealing surface.
  9. Install the oil pan gasket and the oil pan and loosely install the 18 bolts.

  10. Tighten the bolts in 3 stages, in the sequence shown.
    • Stage 1: Tighten to 2 N.m (18 lb-in).
    • Stage 2: Tighten to 20 N.m (15 lb-ft).
    • Stage 3: Tighten an additional 60 degrees.

  11. Install the flexplate inspection cover and the 2 bolts.
    • Tighten to 34 N.m (25 lb-ft).

  12. Lower the transmission.
  13. Align the engine mount studs and lower the engine.
    • Remove the special tools.

  14. CAUTION: Only use hand tools when installing the RH engine mount nut or damage to the engine mount can occur.
    NOTE: Align the engine-to-transmission dowels before installing the engine mount bolt.
    NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.

  15. Install the 6 engine mount nuts.
    • Tighten to 103 N.m (76 lb-ft).
  16. Install the starter motor wiring harness support bracket and the nut.
    • Tighten to 10 N.m (89 lb-in).

  17. Install the transmission cooler tube support bracket and the nut.
    • Tighten to 10 N.m (89 lb-in).

  18. Support the transmission and remove the 3 LH crossmember bolts.

  19. Remove the 2 RH crossmember bolts and nuts.

  20. Remove the nut and the transmission crossmember.

  21. If the vehicle is equipped with TSS and turbine/OSS, remove the plugs and install the sensors in the transmission. For additional information, refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - TORQSHIFT article.
  22. Install the 4 exhaust manifold flange nuts.
    • Tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).

  23. Install the starter. For additional information, refer to STARTING SYSTEM - GASOLINE ENGINES article.
  24. Position the oil cooler and install the threaded shaft.
    • Tighten to 58 Nm (43 lb-ft).

  25. Install a new oil filter.

  26. Install the TB spacer. For additional information, refer to FUEL CHARGING AND CONTROLS - 6.8L (3V) article.
  27. Install the generator. For additional information, refer to GENERATOR AND REGULATOR article.
  28. Install the cooling fan shroud. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING article.
  29. Install the air cleaner outlet tube. For additional information, refer to INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION AND FILTERING article.
  30. Fill the crankcase with clean engine oil.
