Drive Pinion Seal: Removal

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING AND LIFTING article.
  2. Remove the front tires and wheels. For additional information, refer to WHEELS AND TIRES article.
  3. CAUTION: Do not allow the brake caliper to hang from the brake hose or damage to the hose can occur.
  4. Remove the 2 brake caliper bolts from the LH and RH brake calipers and position the calipers aside.

  6. Index-mark the front driveshaft and the front axle flange to maintain driveline balance.

  8. Disconnect the front driveshaft from the front axle flange and position it aside.
    • Remove and discard the 4 bolts and 2 retainers.
    • Disconnect the front driveshaft from the front axle flange.
    • Tape the bearing cups to the spider to prevent them from falling off the spider.
    • Position the driveshaft aside.

  10. Measure the pinion bearing torque preload. Record the reading.
    • Rotate the pinion with a N.m (lb-in) torque wrench. Record the torque necessary to maintain rotation of the pinion through several revolutions.

  12. Using the special tool, remove and discard the pinion nut and washer.

    NOTE: Index-mark the flange and the pinion shaft.
  14. Using the special tool, remove the flange.

  16. Using the special tools, remove the pinion seal. Discard the seal.
  17. Clean and inspect the following:
    • The seal mounting surface.
    • The flange lugs and the flange end that contacts the bearing cone.
      • Verify that the flange nut counterbore and the seal contact surfaces are smooth and free of nicks.
