Differential Case and Ring Gear - Two-Piece, Traction-Lok®: Disassembly

  1. Remove the differential carrier. For additional information, refer to Differential Carrier .
  2. Fig 1: Identifying 12 Differential Ring Gear Bolts

  3. Remove and discard the 12 ring gear bolts.

    NOTE: The anti-lock speed sensor ring cannot be reused once removed.
  5. Insert a punch in the bolt holes and drive the ring gear off.
    • If necessary, remove the anti-lock speed sensor ring and discard it.

  7. Position the special tool in a vise.

  9. Position the differential case on the special tool.

  11. Index-mark the differential case halves.
  12. Fig 6: Differential Case Bolts

  13. Remove the 6 differential case bolts.

  15. Remove the right differential case half and differential side gear.

  17. Remove the differential pinion shaft, 3 differential pinion gears and 3 differential gear thrust washers.

  19. Remove the differential pinion gears and thrust washers from the differential pinion shaft.

  21. Remove the differential side gears and differential clutch packs from each differential case half and tag them RH and LH.

  23. Remove the Belleville spring and shim(s) from both differential clutch packs.
