Pinpoint Test H: Excessive Noise

  1. H1 TRANSMISSION NEUTRAL GEAR ROLLOVER TEST 
    • Start the engine and let idle with transmission in NEUTRAL and clutch engaged (pedal up). If noise is excessive, depress the clutch pedal to stop the transmission input shaft from rotating.
    • Does the noise stop when the clutch pedal is depressed? 
    1. YES  : INSPECT clutch components.
    2. NO  : Go to  H2.
  2. H2 CHECK THE CLUTCH SYSTEM 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Using slow, medium, then fast strokes, depress and release the clutch pedal.
    • Is there a squeak? 
    1. YES  : Go to  H3.
    2. NO  : The clutch system is OK. VERIFY customer concern.
  3. H3 CHECK THE STARTER INTERLOCK SWITCH 
    • Remove the starter interlock switch. Using slow, medium, then fast strokes, depress and release the clutch pedal.
    • Is there a squeak? 
    1. YES  : REINSTALL the starter interlock switch. Go to  H4 .
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new starter interlock switch. REFER to CLUTCH CONTROLS article.
  4. H4 CHECK THE CLUTCH SLAVE CYLINDER 
    • Remove the transmission. Refer to MANUAL TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION article.
    • Inspect the clutch slave cylinder for wear or loss of lubrication. Refer to CLUTCH CONTROLS article.
    • Are there signs of wear or loss of lubrication? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new clutch slave cylinder and bearing; REFER to CLUTCH CONTROLS article.
    2. NO  : Go to  H5 .
  5. H5 CHECK THE PILOT BEARING 
    • Inspect the pilot bearing for damage.
    • Is the pilot bearing OK? 
    1. YES  : Go to  H6.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new pilot bearing.
  6. H6 CHECK THE TORSION SPRINGS 
    • Inspect the torsion springs for fatigue or breakage.
    • Are there any signs of fatigue or breakage? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new clutch disc. REFER to CLUTCH article. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : INSPECT the crankshaft end play. REFER to ENGINE - 4.2L article.
