Pinpoint Test E: The Steering Wheel Control Switch Illumination Source Is Inoperative

CAUTION: Use the correct probe adaptor(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adaptor(s) may damage the connector.
  1. E1 CHECK THE HORN OPERATION 
    • Press the horn switch.
    • Does the horn sound? 
    1. YES  : Go to  E2.
    2. NO  : REFER to HORN article.
  2. E2 CHECK CIRCUIT 1011 (TN/OG) FOR VOLTAGE 
    • Disconnect: Clockspring C218b
    • Turn the parking lamps on, and rotate the dimmer switch to the full illumination position.

    • Measure the voltage between the clockspring C218b-1, circuit 1011 (TN/OG), harness side and ground.
    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
    1. YES  : Go to  E3.
    2. NO  : VERIFY the auxiliary relay box 1 fuse 1 (5A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  3. E3 CHECK THE CLOCKSPRING 
    • Turn the parking lamps off.
    • Remove the driver air bag module. Refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
    • Disconnect: Upper Clockspring Connector
    • Measure the resistance between the upper clockspring pin 1, component side and the clockspring C218b, pin 1, component side.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new clockspring. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article. INSTALL the driver air bag module. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : Go to  E4.
  4. E4 CHECK THE STEERING WHEEL CONTROL SWITCH HARNESS 
    • Inspect the steering wheel control switch harness for shorts, opens or any damage.
    • Is the steering wheel control switch harness OK? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL new steering wheel audio and climate control switches or speed control switches as necessary. REFER to SPEED CONTROL article for speed control switches or INFORMATION AND ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEMS article for auxiliary audio control switches. INSTALL the driver air bag module. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : REPAIR or INSTALL a new steering wheel control switch harness. INSTALL the driver air bag module. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article. TEST the system for normal operation.
