Inspection and Verification

  1. Verify the customer's concern by operating the climate control system to duplicate the condition.
  2. Inspect to determine if one of the following mechanical or electrical concerns apply:
    VISUAL INSPECTION CHART

    Mechanical Electrical
    • Loose, missing or damaged A/C compressor drive belt
    • Loose or disconnected A/C clutch
    • Broken or binding door/actuator
    • Broken or leaking refrigerant lines
    • Obstructed in-vehicle temperature sensor
    • Disconnected in-vehicle temperature aspirator hose
    • Central junction box (CJB) fuse(s):
      • 5 (7.5A)
      • 11 (10A)
      • 13 (10A)
      • 14 (10A)
      • 32 (15A)
      • 102 (20A)
      • 116 (30A)
    • Blower motor inoperative
    • A/C compressor inoperative
    • Circuitry open/shorted
    • Disconnected electrical connectors
    • Cooling fan inoperative
  3. As pinpoint tests and measurements are being carried out, be sure to inspect for any disconnected, loose-fitting or incorrectly installed component, module and in-line electrical connectors and pins.
  4. If the inspection reveals obvious concerns that can be readily identified, repair as necessary.
  5. NOTE: Make sure to use the latest scan tool software release.
  6. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the data link connector (DLC).
  7. NOTE: The vehicle communication module (VCM) LED prove-out confirms power and ground from the DLC are provided to the VCM.
  8. If the scan tool does not communicate with the VCM:
    • check the VCM connection to the vehicle.
    • check the scan tool connection to the VCM.
  9. If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
    • verify the ignition key is in the ON position.
    • verify the scan tool operation with a known good vehicle.
    • refer to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK article to diagnose no response from the PCM or HVAC module - electronic automatic temperature control (EATC).
  10. Carry out the network test.
    • If the network test passes, retrieve and record the continuous memory DTCs.
  11. Carry out the on-demand self-test diagnostics from the PCM or HVAC module - EATC and retrieve continuous DTCs for the HVAC module - EATC.
  12. NOTE: Some PCM DTCs may inhibit A/C operation. If any PCM DTCs are retrieved, diagnose those first. Refer to the INTRODUCTION - GASOLINE ENGINES article.
  13. If any of the EATC DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the HVAC Module - Electronic Automatic Temperature Control (EATC) DTC Chart. If the PCM DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the INTRODUCTION - GASOLINE ENGINES article. For all other DTCs, refer to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES article.
  14. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, go to Symptom Chart - Climate Control Systems .
