Pinpoint Test B: The Engine Does Not Crank And The Relay Does Not Click (Early Build Vehicles)

- B1 CHECK THE BATTERY
- Check the battery condition and charge. Refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES article.
- Is the battery OK?
- YES : Go to B2.
- NO : CHARGE or INSTALL a new battery as required. TEST the system for normal operation.
- B2 CHECK CIRCUIT 1093 (TN/RD) FOR VOLTAGE
- Disconnect: Starter Motor Relay
- Key in START position.
- Measure the voltage between starter motor relay pin 86, circuit 1093 (TN/RD) and ground while holding the key in the START position.
- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
- B3 CHECK CIRCUIT 325 (DB/OG) FOR VOLTAGE AT THE DIGITAL TR SENSOR
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Digital TR Sensor C167
- Key in START position.
- Measure the voltage between digital TR sensor C167-10, circuit 325 (DB/OG) and ground while holding the key in the START position.
- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
- B4 CHECK CIRCUIT 1093 (TN/RD) FOR AN OPEN
- Measure the resistance between digital TR sensor C167-12, circuit 1093 (TN/RD) and starter motor relay pin 86, circuit 1093 (TN/RD).
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
- YES : Go to B5.
- NO : REPAIR circuit 1093 (TN/RD). TEST the system for normal operation.
- B5 CHECK THE DIGITAL TR SENSOR ADJUSTMENT
- Carry out the Digital TR Sensor Adjustment. Refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - 4R70E/4R75E article.
- Is the digital TR sensor adjusted correctly?
- YES : INSTALL a new digital TR sensor. TEST the system for normal operation.
- NO : ADJUST the digital TR sensor as necessary. TEST the system for normal operation.
- B6 CHECK CIRCUIT 325 (DB/OG)
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: In-Line Harness C110
- Key in START position.
- Measure the voltage between in-line harness C110-1, female side, circuit 325 (DB/OG) and ground while holding the key in the START position.
- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
- B7 CHECK CIRCUIT 1093 (TN/RD) FOR AN OPEN
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Starter Motor Relay
- Measure the resistance between in-line C110-12, female side, circuit 1093 (TN/RD) and starter motor relay pin 86, circuit 1093 (TN/RD).
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
- YES : INSTALL a new 15525 transmission wiring harness. TEST the system for normal operation.
- NO : REPAIR circuit 1093 (TN/RD). TEST the system for normal operation.
- B8 CHECK CIRCUIT 1050 (LG/VT) FOR VOLTAGE
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Ignition Switch C250
- Measure the voltage between ignition switch C250-4, circuit 1050 (LG/VT) and ground.
- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
- YES : Go to B9.
- NO : REPAIR circuit 1050 (LG/VT). TEST the system for normal operation.
- B9 CHECK DIGITAL TR SENSOR ADJUSTMENT
- Carry out the Digital Transmission Range (TR) Sensor Adjustment or Transmission Range (TR) Sensor Adjustment. Refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - 4R70E/4R75E article.
- Is the digital TR or TR sensor adjusted correctly?
- YES : Go to B10.
- NO : ADJUST the digital TR or TR sensor as necessary. TEST the system for normal operation.
- B10 CHECK THE STARTER MOTOR RELAY GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Key in START position.
- Measure the voltage between starter motor relay pin 85, circuit 1785 (LG/VT) and pin 86, circuit 1093 (TN/RD) with the clutch pedal depressed, if equipped.
- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
- YES : INSTALL a new starter motor relay. TEST the system for normal operation.
- NO : Go to B11.
- B11 CHECK CIRCUIT 1785 (LG/VT) FOR AN OPEN
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: PCM C175B
- Measure the resistance between PCM C175B-34, circuit 1785 (LG/VT) and starter motor relay pin 85, circuit 1785 (LG/VT).
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
- B12 CHECK THE CLUTCH PEDAL POSITION (CPP) SWITCH BOTTOM OF TRAVEL INPUT TO THE PCM
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: PCM C175B
- Fully depress the clutch pedal.
- Measure the resistance between PCM C175B-39, circuit 1903 (WH/BK) and C175B-67, - 68, - 69 or-70, circuit 570 (BK/WH).
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
- B13 CHECK CIRCUIT 1903 (WH/BK) FOR AN OPEN
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: CPP Switch C257
- Measure the resistance between PCM C175B-39, circuit 1903 (WH/BK) and CPP switch C257-1, circuit 1903 (WH/BK).
- Is the resistance less than 2 ohms?
- YES : Go to B14.
- NO : REPAIR circuit 1903 (WH/BK). TEST the system for normal operation.
- B14 CHECK CIRCUIT 570 (BK/WH) FOR AN OPEN
- Measure the resistance between PCM C175B-67, -68, -69 or -70, circuit 570 (BK/WH) and CPP switch C257-2, circuit 570 (BK/WH).
- Is the resistance less than 2 ohms?
- YES : INSTALL a new CPP switch. REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS article. TEST the system for normal operation.
- NO : REPAIR circuit 570 (BK/WH). TEST the system for normal operation.
- B15 CHECK THE PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS)
- Carry out the Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) Diagnostic Routine. Refer to ANTI-THEFT article.
- Is the PATS system OK?
- YES : DIAGNOSE the PCM. REFER to the INTRODUCTION - GASOLINE ENGINES article.
- NO : REPAIR the PATS system. REFER to ANTI-THEFT article. TEST the system for normal operation.
