Inspection and Verification

WARNING: When using a remote starter switch or jumper wire, be sure the ignition switch is in the OFF position and the transmission is in PARK with the parking brake control fully applied. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
WARNING: When working underhood in the vicinity of the starter motor, be aware that the heavy gauge battery input lead at the starter solenoid is "electrically hot" at all times. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
WARNING: When working in the area of the starter motor, be careful to avoid touching hot exhaust components. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
NOTE: When working on the starter system, make sure the anti-theft system is operational.
  1. Verify the customer concern by operating the starting system to duplicate the condition.
  2. Inspect to determine if any of the following mechanical or electrical concerns apply.
    VISUAL INSPECTION CHART

    Mechanical Electrical
    • Starter motor
    • Brackets
    • Starter motor bolts
    • Flexplate
    • Flywheel
    • Battery
    • Anti-theft relay
    • Failed central junction box (CJB) fuse 101 (30A)
    • CJB fuse 102 (20A)
    • Damaged wiring harness
    • Loose or corroded connections
  3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
    4. NOTE: Make sure to use the latest scan tool software release.
  4. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the data link connector (DLC).
    5. NOTE: The vehicle communication module (VCM) LED prove out confirms power and ground from the DLC are provided to the VCM.
  5. If the scan tool does not communicate with the VCM:
    • check the VCM connection to the vehicle.
    • check the scan tool connection to the VCM.
  6. If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
    • verify the ignition key is in the ON position.
    • verify the scan tool operation with a known good vehicle.
  7. Carry out the network test.
    • If the network test passes, retrieve and record continuous memory diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
  8. Clear the continuous DTCs and carry out the self-test diagnostics for the PCM.
  9. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to Powertrain Control Module (PCM) - Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart or the Starter and Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart. For all other DTCs, refer to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES article.
  10. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, go to Symptom Chart .
    POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) - DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) CHART

    DTC Description Source Action
    P0512 Starter Request Circuit - Circuit has Power With the Ignition in the OFF Position Powertrain Control Module (PCM) CARRY OUT the Ignition Switch Component Test. Refer to COMPONENT TESTING. If necessary, INSTALL a new ignition switch. If the ignition switch passed the component test, REPAIR circuit 1522 (DG) or 32 (RD/LB) for a short to power.
    P0830 Clutch Pedal Switch A Circuit PCM REFER to Content Not Found article.
    P0833 Clutch Pedal Switch B Circuit PCM REFER to Content Not Found article.
    PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) - DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) CHART

    DTC Description Source Action
    B1213 Anti-Theft Number of Programmed Keys is Below Minimum Powertrain Control Module (PCM) REFER to ANTI-THEFT article.
    B1342 Electronic Control Unit (ECU) is Faulted PCM CLEAR the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). REPEAT the self-test. If DTC B1342 is retrieved again, INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to, ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS article. REPEAT the self-test.
    B1600 Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) Key Transponder Signal Is Not Received PCM REFER to ANTI-THEFT article.
    B1601 PATS Received Incorrect Key-Code From Ignition Key Transponder PCM REFER to ANTI-THEFT article.
    B1602 PATS Received Invalid Format of Key-Code From Ignition Key Transponder PCM REFER to ANTI-THEFT article.
    B1681 PATS Transceiver Module Signal is Not Received PCM REFER to ANTI-THEFT article.
    B2103 Antenna Not Connected PCM REFER to ANTI-THEFT article.
    B2431 Transponder Programming Failed Instrument Cluster The ignition key was not programmed. PROGRAM the key. REFER to ANTI-THEFT article.
    P1260 Theft Detected, Vehicle Immobilized PCM NOTE: If there are any PATS DTCs present, ADDRESS them first. If DTC P1260 is the only DTC present, there is a power or ground concern with the PCM. REFER to the Content Not Found article.
