Pinpoint Test H: Mechanical Shift On The Fly (MSOF) Functional Test

NOTE: 4x4 high/low (4H/4L) is not intended for driving on hard/dry surfaces.
  1. H1 CHECK FOR 4WD INDICATOR PROVE-OUT 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Do the four wheel drive (4WD) indicators illuminate at prove-out? 
    1. YES  : Go to  H2.
    2. NO  : CHECK the instrument cluster for faults. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER article.
  2. H2 CHECK 2WD OPERATION 
    • Shift the transfer case to 2H.
    • Do the 4WD indicators turn OFF? 
    1. YES  : Go to  H4.
    2. NO  : Go to  H3.
  3. H3 CHECK FOR DTCs 
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Carry out the on-demand self test.
    • Are DTCs retrieved? 
    1. YES  : REFER to the Four Wheel Drive (4WD) Control Module (PCM) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart .
    2. NO  : Go to  H4.
  4. H4 CHECK FOR WIND-UP IN 2H 
    • Drive the vehicle on a dry, hard surface while executing turns.
    • Is wind-up present in turns? 
    1. YES  : REPAIR the transfer case. REFER to TRANSFER CASE article.
    2. NO  : Go to  H5.
  5. H5 CHECK 4H OPERATION 
    • Shift the transfer case to 4H.
    • Does the 4H indicator illuminate correctly? 
    1. YES  : Go to  H8.
    2. NO  : Go to  H6.
  6. H6 CHECK FOR DTCs 
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Carry out the on-demand self test.
    • Are DTCs retrieved? 
    1. YES  : REFER to the Four Wheel Drive (4WD) Control Module (PCM) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart .
    2. NO  : Go to  H7.
  7. H7 CHECK FOR WIND-UP IN 4H 
    • Drive the vehicle on a dry, hard surface while executing turns.
    • Is wind-up present in turns? 
    1. YES  : Go to Pinpoint Test I .
    2. NO  : Go to Pinpoint Test C .
  8. H8 CHECK FOR 4H STRAIGHT LINE WIND-UP 
    • Drive the vehicle on a dry, hard surface.
    • Is straightline wind-up present? 
    1. YES  : Go to Pinpoint Test G .
    2. NO  : Go to  H9.
  9. H9 CHECK FOR WIND-UP IN 4H 
    • Drive the vehicle on a dry, hard surface while executing turns.
    • Is wind-up present in turns? 
    1. YES  : Go to  H10.
    2. NO  : Go to Pinpoint Test C .
  10. H10 CHECK 4L OPERATION 
    • Shift to 4L with the brake applied, vehicle at rest, transmission in NEUTRAL.
    • Can the shift lever be put in 4L? 
    1. YES  : Go to  H11.
    2. NO  : Go to Pinpoint Test D .
  11. H11 CHECK 4L INDICATOR 
    • Observe the instrument cluster.
    • Does the 4L indicator illuminate? 
    1. YES  : Go to  H12.
    2. NO  : Go to  H13.
  12. H12 CHECK WIND-UP IN 4L 
    • Drive the vehicle on a dry, hard surface.
    • Is wind-up present and 4L functioning? 
    1. YES  : Go to  H16.
    2. NO  : Go to  H15.
  13. H13 CHECK FOR DTCs 
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Carry out the on-demand self test.
    • Are DTCs retrieved? 
    1. YES  : REFER to the Four Wheel Drive (4WD) Control Module (PCM) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart .
    2. NO  : Go to  H14.
  14. H14 CHECK WIND-UP IN 4L 
    • Drive the vehicle on a dry, hard surface while executing turns.
    • Is wind-up present in turns? 
    1. YES  : Go to Pinpoint Test I .
    2. NO  : Go to Pinpoint Test C .
  15. H15 CHECK FOR DTCs 
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Carry out the on-demand self test.
    • Are DTCs retrieved? 
    1. YES  : REFER to the Four Wheel Drive (4WD) Control Module (PCM) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart .
    2. NO  : Go to Pinpoint Test C .
  16. H16 CHECK 4L TO 2H SHIFT 
    • Shift from 4L to 2H with the brake applied, vehicle at rest, transmission in NEUTRAL.
    • Do the 4WD indicators turn OFF? 
    1. YES  : Go to  H19.
    2. NO  : Go to  H17.
  17. H17 CHECK FOR DTCs 
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Carry out the on-demand self test.
    • Are DTCs retrieved? 
    1. YES  : REFER to the Four Wheel Drive (4WD) Control Module (PCM) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart .
    2. NO  : Go to  H18.
  18. H18 CHECK WIND-UP IN 2H 
    • Drive the vehicle on a dry, hard surface while executing turns.
    • Is wind-up present in turns? 
    1. YES  : Go to Pinpoint Test C .
    2. NO  : Go to Pinpoint Test I .
  19. H19 CHECK FOR TRANSFER CASE DISENGAGEMENT 
    • Start the engine.
    • With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to JACKING AND LIFTING article.
    • Rotate the rear driveshaft while observing the front driveshaft.
    • Does the front driveshaft rotate? 
    1. YES  : Go to  H21.
    2. NO  : Go to  H20.
  20. H20 CHECK FOR LH AND RH IWE DISENGAGEMENT 
    • With the engine running, rotate the LH front tire one revolution forward and one revolution backward while observing the LH front halfshaft and universal joint.
    • Rotate the RH front tire one revolution forward and one revolution backward while observing the RH front halfshaft and universal joint.
    • Does the LH or RH front halfshaft rotate? 
    1. YES  : Go to Pinpoint Test B .
    2. NO  : Go to  H22.
  21. H21 CHECK FOR TRANSFER CASE DISENGAGEMENT 
    • Disconnect the shift lever from the transfer case. Refer to TRANSFER CASE article.
    • Shift the transfer case external control lever fully clockwise into 2H.
    • Rotate the rear driveshaft while observing the front driveshaft.
    • Does the front driveshaft rotate? 
    1. YES  : REPAIR the transfer case. REFER to TRANSFER CASE article.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new transfer case shift lever. REFER to TRANSFER CASE article. TEST the system for normal operation.
  22. H22 CHECK FOR IWE VACUUM LEAKS 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect both vacuum lines from the IWE solenoid.
    • Using a vacuum pump, apply 508 mm (20 in) Hg of vacuum to the IWE apply vacuum circuit.
    • Observe the vacuum reading.
    • Did the vacuum drop more than 25 mm (1 in) Hg per minute? 
    1. YES  : CHECK the IWE and related components for leaks. Go to Pinpoint Test B .
    2. NO  : Go to  H23.
  23. H23 CHECK 2H TO 4H SHIFT AT SPEED ABOVE 32 KM/H (20 MPH) 
    • Lower the vehicle and take it off of the hoist.
    • Shift the transfer case to 2H.
    • Drive the vehicle on the road and carry out a 2H to 4H shift while driving above 32 km/h (20 mph).
    • Does the transfer case shift to 4H satisfactorily? 
    1. YES  : The 4WD system is functioning correctly.
    2. NO  : Go to Pinpoint Test E .
