Pinpoint Test W: Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B2844 Ignition Fault

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Milan, 2006 Lincoln Zephyr, and 2006 Ford Fusion. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Use the correct probe adaptor(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adaptor(s) may damage the connector.
  1. W1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCs) FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SELF-TESTS
    • Check for recorded instrument cluster DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests.
    • Are any instrument cluster DTCs recorded?

Yes  : If DTC B1352 is retrieved, REFER to WARNING DEVICES to continue diagnosis of the DTC.

If any other instrument cluster DTCs are retrieved, REFER to the INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX .

No  : If DTC B2844 is retrieved, GO to W2.

  2. W2 CHECK CIRCUIT CBP20 (YE/VT) FOR VOLTAGE WITH THE IGNITION SWITCH IN THE ACC POSITION
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220.
    • Key in ACCESSORY position.
    • Measure the voltage between the instrument cluster C220-20, circuit CBP20 (YE/VT), harness side and ground.

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts with the ignition switch in the ACC position?

Yes  : REFER to STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES to continue diagnosis of the ignition switch. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

    No  : GO to W3.

  3. W3 CHECK CIRCUIT CBP20 (YE/VT) FOR VOLTAGE WITH THE IGNITION SWITCH IN THE RUN OR START POSITION
    • Key in ON position.
    • Key in START position.
    • Measure the voltage between the instrument cluster C220-20, circuit CBP20 (YE/VT), harness side and ground.

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts with the ignition switch in the RUN and the START position, and does the voltage drop to 0 volts when the ignition switch is turned to the OFF position?

    Yes  : GO to W4.

No  : REFER to STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES to continue diagnosis of the ignition switch. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

  4. W4 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
    • Disconnect the instrument cluster connector.
    • Check for:
      • Corrosion
      • Pushed-out pins
    • Connect the instrument cluster connector and make sure it seats correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present?

Yes  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . TEST the system for normal operation.

No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
