Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Deactivation and Reactivation: Deactivation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Milan, 2006 Lincoln Zephyr, and 2006 Ford Fusion. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) vehicle and when handling an air bag module. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
WARNING: After deployment, the air bag surface can contain deposits of sodium hydroxide, a product of the gas generant combustion that is irritating to the skin. Wash your hands with soap and water afterwards.
WARNING: Never probe the connectors on the air bag module. Doing so can result in air bag deployment, which can result in personal injury.
WARNING: The safety belt pretensioner is a pyrotechnic device. Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag equipped vehicle and when handling a safety belt buckle pretensioner or safety belt retractor pretensioner. Never probe a pretensioner electrical connector. Doing so could result in pretensioner or air bag deployment and could result in personal injury.
WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury, do not use any memory saver devices.
NOTE: If a seat equipped with a SRS component is being serviced, the SRS must be depowered. 
NOTE: After diagnosing or repairing an SRS, the restraint system diagnostic tools must be removed before operating the vehicle over the road. 
NOTE: The air bag warning lamp illuminates when the restraints control module (RCM) fuse is removed and the ignition switch is ON. This is normal operation and does not indicate a SRS fault.
NOTE: The SRS must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.

    All vehicles 

  1. Turn all vehicle accessories OFF.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to OFF.
  3. At the smart junction box (SJB), located below the LH side of the instrument panel, remove the cover and the restraints control module (RCM) fuse 25 (7.5A) from the SJB.
  4. Turn the ignition ON and visually monitor the air bag indicator for at least 30 seconds. The air bag indicator will remain lit continuously (no flashing) if the correct RCM fuse has been removed. If the air bag indicator does not remain lit continuously, remove the correct RCM fuse before proceeding.
  5. Turn the ignition OFF.
    6. WARNING: To avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury, the backup power supply must be depleted before repairing or replacing any front or side air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) components and before servicing, replacing, adjusting or striking components near the front or side air bag sensors, such as doors, instrument panel, console, door latches, strikers, seats and hood latches.
    The front impact severity sensor is located on the radiator support bracket near the hood latch assembly.
    The first row side impact sensors (if equipped) are located at or near the base of the B-pillars.
    The second row side impact sensors (if equipped) are located on the C-pillars.
    To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies (if equipped).
  6. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
    7. NOTE: There are 2 locking pins that retain the driver air bag module to the steering wheel.

  7. Using a 3-mm Allen wrench or a suitable tool through the access hole on the backside of the steering wheel, position the tool against the spring clip and push in, disengaging the clip from the locking pin. With the spring clip disengaged from the locking pin, gently pull back on that side of the driver air bag module to release it from the steering wheel.
  8. Repeat the previous step for the second locking pin.
    9. CAUTION: Do not pull the driver air bag module electrical connectors out by the locking buttons. Damage to the locking buttons can occur.

  9. Using a small screwdriver as shown, lift up and release the locking buttons on the driver air bag module electrical connectors. With the locking buttons released, remove the electrical connectors and the driver air bag module.
  10. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tools to the clockspring electrical connectors at the top of the steering column.

  11. Open the glove compartment door and release the door damper cable, then fully lower the door.

  12. Remove the 2 passenger air bag module bolts.

    13. CAUTION: Do not handle the passenger air bag module by grabbing the edges of the deployment door.

  13. Release the deployment door clips from the instrument panel (I/P) and then remove the passenger air bag module from the I/P.

    14. Zephyr 

  14. Remove the I/P end panel.

  15. Through the glove compartment opening and the side of the I/P, remove the 5 RH I/P trim panel nuts on the inside of the I/P.
  16. Pull out releasing the 2 retaining clips and remove the RH I/P trim panel.

  17. Through the glove compartment opening, remove the 2 passenger air bag module bolts.

    18. CAUTION: Do not handle the passenger air bag module by grabbing the edges of the deployment door.
  18. Through the glove compartment opening, release the deployment door clips from the I/P and then remove the passenger air bag module from the I/P.

  19. Using a small screwdriver as shown, lift up and release the locking buttons on the passenger air bag module electrical connectors.

  20. With the locking buttons released, remove the electrical connectors and the passenger air bag module.

  21. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tools to the passenger air bag module electrical connectors.

    22. Vehicles with seat side air bags and side air curtain modules 

  22. From under the rear of the passenger seat, slide and disengage the passenger seat side air bag module electrical connector locking clip, and then release the tab and disconnect the passenger seat side air bag module electrical connector.

  23. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tool to the vehicle harness side of the passenger seat side air bag module electrical connector.

  28. Remove the LH C-pillar trim cover retainer caps.

  30. Disconnect the LH side air curtain module electrical connector.

  31. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tool to the LH safety side air curtain electrical connector.

  32. From under the rear of the driver seat, slide and disengage the driver seat side air bag module electrical connector locking clip, and then release the tab and disconnect the driver seat side air bag module electrical connector.

  33. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tool to the vehicle harness side of the driver seat side air bag module electrical connector.

    34. All vehicles 

  34. Install RCM fuse 25 (7.5A) to the SJB.
  35. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .

Reactivation 

All vehicles 

  1. Remove restraints control module (RCM) fuse 25 (7.5A) from the SJB.
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute.

    3. Vehicles with seat side air bags and side air curtain modules 

  3. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the vehicle harness side of the driver seat side air bag module electrical connector.

  4. Connect the driver seat side air bag module electrical connector and then slide and engage the seat side air bag electrical connector locking clip.

  5. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the LH side air curtain module electrical connector.

  6. Connect the LH side air curtain module electrical connector.

  7. Install the LH C-pillar trim cover and the retainers.
  8. Install the LH C-pillar trim cover retainer caps.

  9. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the RH side air curtain module electrical connector.

  10. Connect the RH side air curtain module electrical connector.

  11. Install the RH C-pillar trim cover and the retainers.
  12. Install the RH C-pillar trim cover retainer caps.

  13. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the vehicle harness side of the passenger seat side air bag module electrical connector.

  14. Connect the passenger seat side air bag module electrical connector and then slide and engage the seat side air bag electrical connector locking clip.

  15. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tools from the passenger air bag module electrical connectors.
    16. CAUTION: Do not install the passenger air bag module electrical connectors by the locking buttons. Damage to the locking buttons can occur.
    CAUTION: The passenger air bag module electrical connector locking buttons must be in the released position when the connector is being installed, or connector damage may occur.
    CAUTION: The passenger air bag module electrical connectors are unique and cannot be reversed when connected to the passenger air bag module. Match the electrical connector key to the keyway in the passenger air bag module. Do not force the electrical connectors into the passenger air bag module.

  16. With the locking buttons released, install the passenger air bag module electrical connectors fully into the passenger air bag module and seat the locking buttons.

    17. Zephyr 

    CAUTION: Do not handle the passenger air bag module by grabbing the edges of the deployment door.
    NOTE: During air bag module installation, make sure all the deployment door clips are fully seated in the I/P.
  17. Install the passenger air bag module into the I/P.
  18. Through the glove compartment opening, install the 2 passenger air bag module bolts.
    • Tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).

  19. Align the 2 retaining clips and install the RH I/P trim panel.

  20. Through the glove compartment opening and the side of the I/P, install the 5 RH I/P trim panel nuts on the inside of the I/P.

    22. Fusion and Milan 

    CAUTION: Do not handle the passenger air bag module by grabbing the edges of the deployment door.
    NOTE: During air bag module installation, make sure all the deployment door clips are fully seated in the I/P.

  22. Install the passenger air bag module into the I/P.
  23. Install the 2 passenger air bag module bolts.
    • Tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).

  24. Attach the glove compartment door damper cable and close the door.

    25. All vehicles 

  25. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tools from the clockspring electrical connectors at the top of the steering column.

    26. CAUTION: Do not install the driver air bag module electrical connectors by the locking buttons. Damage to the locking buttons can occur.
    CAUTION: The driver air bag module electrical connector locking buttons must be in the released position when the connector is being installed, or connector damage may occur.
    CAUTION: The driver air bag module electrical connectors are unique and cannot be reversed when connected to the driver air bag module. Match the electrical connector key to the keyway in the driver air bag module. Do not force the electrical connectors into the driver air bag module.

  26. With the locking buttons released, install the driver air bag module electrical connectors fully into the driver air bag module and seat the locking buttons.
    27. NOTE: Audible clicks will be heard when both wire clips are seated in the driver air bag module.
  27. Align the driver air bag module locking pins to the steering wheel and, while pushing inward, seat the 2 driver air bag module locking pins in the steering wheel wire clips.
    • When the 2 locking pins are seated in place, there should be an even gap between the driver air bag module trim cover and the steering wheel.

    28. WARNING: The restraint system diagnostic tool is for restraint system service only. Remove from vehicle prior to road use. Failure to remove the tool could result in injury and possible violation of vehicle safety standards.
  28. Make sure all restraint system diagnostic tool(s) that may have been installed during the repair have been removed from the vehicle and all SRS components are connected.
  29. Turn the ignition switch from OFF to ON.
  30. Install RCM fuse 25 (7.5A) to the SJB and close the cover.
    31. WARNING: Be sure that nobody is in the vehicle and that there is nothing blocking or set in front of any air bag module when the battery ground cable is connected.
  31. Connect the battery ground cable.
  32. Prove out the supplemental restraint system (SRS) as follows:

    Turn the ignition switch from ON to OFF. Wait 10 seconds, then turn the ignition switch back to ON and visually monitor the air bag indicator with the air bag modules installed. The air bag indicator will light continuously for approximately 6 seconds and then turn OFF. If an air bag SRS fault is present, the air bag indicator will:

    • Fail to light.
    • Remain lit continuously.
    • Flash at a 5 Hz rate (RCM not configured).

    The air bag indicator might not light until approximately 30 seconds after the ignition switch has been turned from the OFF to the ON position. This is the time required for the RCM to complete the testing of the SRS. If the air bag indicator is inoperative and a SRS fault exists, a chime will sound in a pattern of 5 sets of 5 beeps. If this occurs, the air bag indicator and any SRS fault discovered must be diagnosed and repaired.

    Clear all continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) from the RCM and occupant classification sensor (OCS) module using a diagnostic tool.
