Engine Front Cover: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Milan, 2006 Lincoln Zephyr, and 2006 Ford Fusion. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
    CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths.
    CAUTION: Do not damage the oil pan gasket while cleaning the sealant from the lower cylinder block-to-oil pan joint.
  1. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of sealant.
    • Clean all sealing surfaces with metal surface cleaner and install new gaskets.
  2. NOTE: The engine front cover must be installed and the bolts tightened within 4 minutes of applying sealant.

  3. Apply a 6 mm (0.23 in) diameter dot of silicone gasket and sealer to the cylinder block, lower cylinder block, cylinder head and oil pan mating surfaces.
  4. NOTE: Fasteners 1 and 13 are stud bolts.
  5. Position the engine front cover and install the 14 bolts and the 2 stud bolts.
    • Tighten in the sequence shown to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).

  6. Install the 2 oil pan-to-front cover bolts.
    • Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  7. Remove the oil pan plug and drain the engine oil.
    • Install the plug and tighten to 26 Nm (19 lb-ft).
  8. Install the generator, 2 bolts and the stud bolt.
    • Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
  9. Connect the oil pressure sender electrical connector.
  10. Connect the generator electrical connector.
  11. Connect the A/C compressor electrical connector and wiring harness retainer.
  12. Install the LH and RH CMP sensors. For additional information, refer to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - 3.0L (4V) .
  13. Install the engine mount and bracket. For additional information, refer to ENGINE MOUNT .
  14. Install the power steering pump and the 3 bolts.
    • Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  15. Install the LH and RH valve covers. For additional information, refer to VALVE COVER - LH  and VALVE COVER - RH .
  16. Install the accessory drive belt tensioner and 2 idler pulleys. For additional information, refer to ACCESSORY DRIVE - 3.0L (4V) .
  17. Connect the CKP sensor electrical connector and pin-type retainer.
  18. If equipped, install the underbody cover and 7 screws.

  19. Install the crankshaft front seal. For additional information, refer to LOWER END COMPONENTS - EXPLODED VIEW, CRANKSHAFT PULLEY AND CRANKSHAFT FRONT SEAL  and CRANKSHAFT FRONT SEAL .
  20. Fill the engine with clean engine oil.
  21. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  22. Fill the power steering system. For additional information, refer to STEERING SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
