Steering Gear: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Milan, 2006 Lincoln Zephyr, and 2006 Ford Fusion. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: When installing the steering gear, it is important to have the steering gear in the centered position or unequal right to left turns may occur, causing tire contact with the body and/or clockspring damage. A new steering gear is centered and ready for installation.
CAUTION: While repairing the power steering system, care should be taken to prevent the entry of contaminants or premature failure of the power steering components may result.

    All vehicles 

  1. From the LH side of the vehicle, install the steering gear.
  2. Install the steering gear bolts.
    • Tighten to 107 Nm (79 lb-ft).
    3. CAUTION: New banjo bolts and new seals must be installed any time the power steering pressure line is disconnected from the power steering pump and/or the steering gear or a fluid leak may occur.
  3. Install the power steering pressure line banjo bolt and seals.
    • To install, tighten to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft).

    4. 2.3L engine 

  4. Install the power steering pressure line bracket-to-steering gear bolt.
    • To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).

    5. 3.0L Engine 

  5. Install the power steering pressure line bracket-to-steering gear bolt.
    • To install, tighten to 15 Nm (11 lb-ft).
  6. Install the steering gear-to-fluid cooler return hose and the clamp.
  7. Using a suitable jack, raise the rear of the front subframe.
  8. Install the 4 rear bolts and 2 rear nuts.
    • To install, tighten the bolts and nuts in 2 stages.
    • Stage 1: Tighten the nuts to 89 Nm (66 lb-ft).
    • Stage 2: Tighten the bolts to 149 Nm (110 lb-ft).
  9. Install the 2 outer tie-rod end nuts.
    • Tighten the nuts to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
    • Install 2 new cotter pins.
    10. NOTE: Left side shown, right side similar.

  10. If equipped, install the LH and RH splash shields and the splash shield pin-type retainers.
  11. If equipped, install the under body cover shield and the 8 screws.

    12. CAUTION: The steering gear/dash seal must be fully seated in the steering gear valve tower groove before the retaining clips are fully engaged into the body. If the steering gear/dash seal is not seated to the steering gear valve tower groove and the clips are not fully engaged to the body, water and foreign material may enter the passengers compartment and damage the vehicle interior.

  12. Applying hand force to the center of the seal, install the steering gear/dash seal onto the steering gear valve tower until the seal is fully seated in the valve tower groove.
  13. Install the steering gear/dash seal until the retaining clips are fully engaged into the body.

    14. CAUTION: Do not allow the steering intermediate shaft to rotate while it is disconnected from the steering gear or damage to the clockspring may occur. If there is evidence that the intermediate shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered. For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .
    CAUTION: Make sure to correctly align the index marks when installing the steering gear-to-steering column shaft or unequal right to left turns may occur, causing tire contact with the body and/or clockspring damage.
  14. With the index marks correctly aligned, connect the steering column shaft to the steering gear and install the bolt.
    • Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).

  15. Install the lower steering column shaft joint cover and the 2 bolts.

  16. Fill the power steering system. For additional information, refer to STEERING SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
  17. Check and, if necessary, align the front end. For additional information, refer to SUSPENSION SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
