Removal and Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Montego, 2006 Ford Freestyle, and 2006 Ford Five Hundred. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

    All vehicles 

  1. Remove the steering wheel. For additional information, refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  2. Remove the steering column multi-function switch. For additional information, refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  3. Remove the instrument cluster. For additional information, refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  4. Remove the upper and lower steering column shrouds.
  5. Remove the cowl trim panels. For additional information, refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  6. From behind the cowl trim panels, disconnect the electrical connectors.
  7. Remove the lower instrument panel insulator.

  8. Remove the front floor console. For additional information, refer to CONSOLE - FRONT FLOOR  .
  9. Remove the floor shifter. For additional information, refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION EXTERNAL CONTROLS .
  10. Five Hundred, Montego 

  11. Remove the 2 instrument panel center finish panel screws.
  12. All vehicles 

  13. Remove the instrument panel center finish panel.
    • Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  14. Remove the 2 audio unit screws.
  15. Remove the audio unit.
    • Disconnect the audio unit electrical connectors and the antenna cable.
  16. Detach the instrument panel side panels.
  17. Remove the A-pillar trim panels. For additional information, refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  18. Remove the steering column cover.
  19. Position the hood release handle aside.
    • Remove the 2 screws and position the handle aside.
  20. Remove the headlamp switch.
  21. Remove the glove compartment door.
    • Disengage the glove compartment dampener from the keyway.
    • Remove the glove compartment door.
  22. Freestyle 

  23. Remove the passenger side air bag. For additional information, refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  24. Remove the passenger assist handle.
    • Through the glove compartment opening, remove the 3 screws.

  25. Five Hundred, Montego 

  26. Reposition the passenger side air bag.
    1. Through the glove compartment opening, remove the 6 passenger side air bag nuts.
    2. Reposition the passenger side air bag.
  27. Detach the cross-vehicle panel.
    • Disconnect the PAD indicator electrical connector.
  28. All vehicles 

  29. Disconnect the LH side main wiring harness electrical connectors.
    CAUTION: To avoid damaging the instrument panel upper section, this step requires the help of an assistant. Do not bend or crimp the instrument panel upper section upon removal.
  30. Remove the instrument panel upper section.
    • Remove the 8 screws.
      • Remove 1 screw from each side at the upper portion of the panel.
      • Remove 3 screws from each side at the lower portion of the panel and remove the instrument panel upper section.
  31. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
