Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Deactivation and Reactivation: Reactivation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Montego, 2006 Ford Freestyle, and 2006 Ford Five Hundred. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

    All vehicles 

  1. Remove the RCM fuse 21 (7.5A) from the SJB.
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute.

    3. Five Hundred and Montego with safety canopy modules 

  3. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the vehicle harness side of the passenger side safety canopy module electrical connector.

  4. Connect the passenger side safety canopy module electrical connector.

  5. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the vehicle harness side of the driver side safety canopy module electrical connector.

  6. Connect the driver side safety canopy module electrical connector.

  7. Install the C-pillar trim panels. For additional information, refer to C-PILLAR TRIM PANEL - FIVE HUNDRED, MONTEGO .
    • Verify the safety belt retractor operates without excessive effort or binding.

    8. Freestyle with safety canopy modules

  8. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the vehicle harness side of the passenger side safety canopy module electrical connector.

  9. Connect the passenger side safety canopy module electrical connector.
  10. Install the passenger side D-pillar trim panel.
    • Verify the safety belt retractor operates without excessive effort or binding.

  11. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the vehicle harness side of the driver side safety canopy module electrical connector.

  12. Connect the driver side safety canopy module electrical connector.
  13. Install the driver side D-pillar trim panel.
    • Verify the safety belt retractor operates without excessive effort or binding.

    14. Vehicles with side air bags 

  14. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the vehicle harness side of the driver seat side air bag module electrical connector.

  15. Connect the driver seat side air bag module electrical connector and then slide and engage the seat side air bag electrical connector locking clip.

  16. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the vehicle harness side of the passenger seat side air bag module electrical connector.

  17. Connect the passenger seat side air bag module electrical connector and then slide and engage the seat side air bag electrical connector locking clip.

  18. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tools to the vehicle harness side of the passenger air bag module electrical connectors.

  19. Connect the 2 passenger air bag module electrical connectors.
  20. Attach the dampening strut to the LH side of glove compartment door.
  21. Close glove compartment door.
  22. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tools from the clockspring electrical connectors at the top of the steering column.

    23. WARNING: Prior to reinstalling a previously removed driver air bag module, make sure to correctly position the wire clip that retains the driver air bag module to the steering wheel. Failure to follow this instruction will result in incorrect installation of the driver air bag module and may result in personal injury in the event of a driver air bag module deployment.
    NOTE: Follow each step of the wire clip resetting procedure precisely to make sure of correct driver air bag module installation.

  23. Push the driver air bag module wire clip fully back on the 6 tabs on the top of the module.
  24. While making sure the wire clip stays fully seated on the 6 tabs on the top of the module, use a suitable tool to reset the end of the wire clip that is on the top.
    1. Carefully lift the other end of the wire clip over the post.
    2. Pull the wire clip outward to reset.

  25. While still making sure the wire clip stays fully seated on the 6 tabs on the top of the module, use a suitable tool to reset the other end of the wire clip.
    1. Carefully lift the other end of the wire clip over the post.
    2. Pull the wire clip outward to reset.

  26. When the wire clip is reset correctly, it should appear as shown.
    • Make sure the wire clip hook ends are evenly spaced from the center post.

  27. Make sure the driver air bag module wire clip is fully seated on all of the tabs and guides.

  28. Connect the horn and accessories electrical connectors.
    29. CAUTION:
    1. The clockspring electrical connectors are unique and cannot be reversed when connected to the driver air bag module. Match the electrical connector key to the keyway in the driver air bag module. Do not force the electrical connectors into the driver air bag module.
    2. Make sure the driver air bag module wiring is routed clear of the driver air bag mounting hooks on the steering wheel so that the wiring is not pinched during driver air bag module installation.
  29. Connect the driver air bag module electrical connectors as noted in removal.
    30. NOTE: Make sure that all 4 retaining points of the driver air bag module wire clip are fully engaged and seated correctly to the steering wheel.
    NOTE: Audible clicks will be heard when the locking tabs are fully engaged.

  30. Attach the driver air bag module to the steering wheel.
    • Align the driver air bag module to the 4 hooks on the steering wheel and press in until the driver air bag module wire clip is fully engaged to the steering wheel.
    • Check the driver air bag module and horn switch cover for clearance and correct movement.
  31. Install the steering wheel access cover.
    32. WARNING: The restraint system diagnostic tool is for restraint system service only. Remove from vehicle prior to road use. Failure to remove could result in injury and possible violation of vehicle safety standards.
  32. Make sure all restraint system diagnostic tool(s) that may have been installed during the repair have been removed from the vehicle and all SRS components are connected.
  33. Turn the ignition switch from OFF to ON.
  34. Install the RCM fuse 21 (7.5A) to the SJB and install the cover.
    35. WARNING: Be sure that nobody is in the vehicle and that there is nothing blocking or set in front of any air bag module when the battery ground cable is connected.
  35. Connect the battery ground cable.
  36. Prove out the supplemental restraint system (SRS) as follows:

    Turn the ignition key from ON to OFF. Wait 10 seconds, then turn the key back to ON and visually monitor the air bag indicator with the air bag modules installed. The air bag indicator will light continuously for approximately 6 seconds and then turn off. If an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) fault is present, the air bag indicator will:

    • Fail to light.
    • Remain lit continuously.
    • Flash.

    The flashing might not occur until approximately 30 seconds after the ignition switch has been turned from the OFF to the ON position. This is the time required for the restraints control module (RCM) to complete the testing of the SRS. If the air bag indicator is inoperative and a SRS fault exists, a chime will sound in a pattern of 5 sets of 5 beeps. If this occurs, the air bag indicator and any SRS fault discovered must be diagnosed and repaired.

    Clear all continuous DTCs from the restraints control module using a diagnostic tool.
