Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Deactivation and Reactivation: Deactivation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Montego, 2006 Ford Freestyle, and 2006 Ford Five Hundred. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING:
  1. Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) vehicle and when handling an air bag module. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
  2. Live air bag module with the air bag and trim cover pointed away from your body. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
  3. Do not set a live air bag module down with the trim cover face down. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
  4. After deployment, the air bag surface can contain deposits of sodium hydroxide, a product of the gas generant combustion that is irritating to the skin. Wash your hands with soap and water afterwards.
  5. Never probe the connectors on the air bag module. Doing so can result in air bag deployment, which can result in personal injury.
  6. Never probe the connectors on the safety canopy module. Doing so can result in safety canopy deployment, which can result in personal injury.
  7. The safety belt pretensioner is a pyrotechnic device. Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag equipped vehicle and when handling a safety belt buckle pretensioner or safety belt retractor pretensioner. Never probe a pretensioner electrical connector. Doing so could result in pretensioner or air bag deployment and could result in personal injury.
  8. Vehicle sensor orientation is critical for proper system operation. If a vehicle equipped with an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) is involved in a collision, inspect the sensor mounting bracket and wiring pigtail for deformation. Replace and properly position the sensor or any other damaged supplemental restraint system (SRS) components whether or not the air bag is deployed.
  9. The restraint system diagnostic tool is for restraint system service only. Remove from vehicle prior to road use. Failure to remove could result in injury and possible violation of vehicle safety standards.
  10. Do not handle, move or change the original horizontal mounting position of the restraints control module (RCM) while the RCM is connected and the ignition switch is ON. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the inadvertent deployment of the safety canopy and risk of personal injury.
  11. To reduce the risk of personal injury, do not use any memory saver devices.
NOTE:
  1. If a seat equipped with a supplemental restraint system (SRS) component is being serviced, the SRS must be depowered.
  2. The air bag warning lamp illuminates when the RCM fuse is removed and the ignition switch is ON. This is normal operation and does not indicate a supplemental restraint system (SRS) fault.
  3. The SRS must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.

    All vehicles 

  1. Turn all vehicle accessories OFF.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to OFF.
  3. At the smart junction box (SJB), located below the LH side of the instrument panel, remove the cover and the restraints control module (RCM) fuse 21 (7.5A) from the SJB. For additional information, refer to the appropriate SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  4. Turn the ignition ON and visually monitor the air bag indicator for at least 30 seconds. The air bag indicator will remain lit continuously (no flashing) if the correct RCM fuse has been removed. If the air bag indicator does not remain lit continuously, remove the correct RCM fuse before proceeding.
  5. Turn the ignition OFF.
  6. WARNING: To avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury, the backup power supply must be depleted before repairing or replacing any front or side air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) components and before servicing, replacing, adjusting or striking components near the front or side air bag sensors, such as doors, instrument panel, console, door latches, strikers, seats and hood latches.
    The front impact severity sensors are located on the radiator support bracket near the front headlamp assemblies. 
    The first row side impact sensors (if equipped) are located at or near the base of the B -pillars. 
    The second row side impact sensors (if equipped) are located on the C-pillar. 
    To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies (if equipped). 
  7. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  8. NOTE: Follow each step of the procedure precisely to make sure of correct driver air bag module removal and installation.

  9. Remove the steering wheel access cover.
  10. Release one side of the driver air bag module wire clip.
    • While actuating the horn at the lower part of the air bag cover, use a suitable tool (needle nose pliers, etc.) to release the wire clip until it touches the center post.

  11. Release the horn and using a suitable tool, lift the end of the wire clip over the post.

  12. Release the other side of the driver air bag module wire clip.
    • While actuating the horn at the lower part of the air bag cover, use a suitable tool to release the other side of the wire clip until it touches the center post.

  13. Release the horn and with a suitable tool, lift the end of the wire clip over the post causing both ends of the wire clip to overlap.

  14. NOTE: When the driver air bag module wire clip is released correctly, the wire clip will easily slide into place and the 2 wire clip hook ends will come to rest between the 2 inner posts.

  15. With the wire clip ends in the overlapped position, actuate the horn at the upper part of the air bag cover, then push on both ends of the wire clip inward (toward the center of the steering wheel) to release the driver air bag module from the steering wheel.
  16. NOTE: Label the driver air bag module squib number on the driver air bag module electrical connectors before disconnecting.

  17. Release the 2 retaining tabs on each driver air bag module electrical connector and disconnect both connectors.
  18. Disconnect the horn and accessories electrical connectors and remove the driver air bag module.

  19. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tools to the clockspring electrical connectors at the top of the steering column.

  20. Open the glove compartment door.
  21. Release the dampening strut from the LH side of glove compartment door and lower door fully.
  22. NOTE:

  23. Through the glove compartment opening, disconnect the 2 passenger air bag module electrical connectors.

  25. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tools to the vehicle harness side of the passenger air bag module electrical connectors.
  26. Vehicles without side air bags 

    CAUTION: Do not deactivate the side air bag module circuit by removing the side air bag bridge resistor from the side air bag electrical connector.
  27. If the side air bag bridge resistor is removed, an open circuit fault will be generated by the restraints control module (RCM). If a restraint system diagnostic tool is installed at the side air bag floor electrical connector, a low resistance fault will be generated by the RCM.
  28. Vehicles with side air bags 

  29. From under the rear of the passenger seat, slide and disengage the passenger seat side air bag module electrical connector locking clip, and then release the tab and disconnect the passenger seat side air bag module electrical connector.

  30. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tool to the vehicle harness side of the passenger seat side air bag module electrical connector.

  31. From under the rear of the driver seat, slide and disengage the driver seat side air bag module electrical connector locking clip, and then release the tab and disconnect the driver seat side air bag module electrical connector.

  32. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tool to the vehicle harness side of the driver seat side air bag module electrical connector.

  33. Vehicles without safety canopy modules 

    CAUTION: Do not deactivate the safety canopy module circuit by removing the safety canopy bridge resistor from the safety canopy electrical connector.
  34. If the safety canopy bridge resistor is removed, an open circuit fault will be generated by the restraints control module (RCM). If a restraint system diagnostic tool is installed at the safety canopy electrical connector, a low resistance fault will be generated by the RCM.
  35. Freestyle with safety canopy modules 

  36. Release and position aside the driver side D-pillar trim panel.

  40. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tool to the vehicle harness side of the driver side safety canopy module electrical connector.
  41. Release and position aside the passenger side D-pillar trim panel.

  45. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tool to the vehicle harness side of the passenger side safety canopy module electrical connector.

  47. Remove the C-pillar trim panels. For additional information, refer to C-PILLAR TRIM PANEL - FIVE HUNDRED, MONTEGO .

  49. Disconnect the driver side safety canopy module electrical connector.
  50. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tool to the vehicle harness side of the driver side safety canopy module electrical connector.

  51. Disconnect the passenger side safety canopy module electrical connector.

  52. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tool to the vehicle harness side of the passenger side safety canopy module electrical connector.

  53. All vehicles 

  54. Install the RCM fuse 21 (7.5A) to the SJB.
  55. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
