Removal and Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Montego, 2006 Ford Freestyle, and 2006 Ford Five Hundred. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
  2. Remove the muffler and tail pipe. For additional information, refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  3. Remove the exhaust support brace bolts, then the exhaust support brace.
    • To install, tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).

  4. WARNING: Failure to correctly index-mark the driveshaft will lead to noise, vibration or harshness (NVH) problems.
    NOTE: Index-mark the driveshaft to the rear axle pinion flange, the power take off (PTO) flange and the center bearing bracket.
  5. Index-mark the driveshaft.
  6. WARNING: Always install new driveshaft flange bolts when removed.
    NOTE: Use a cross pattern to tighten the driveshaft flange bolts.

  7. Remove and discard the driveshaft flange bolts from the rear axle pinion flange, then disconnect the driveshaft from the rear axle pinion flange.
    • To install, tighten to 25 N.m (18 lb-ft).
  8. WARNING: Always install new driveshaft flange bolts when removed.
    NOTE: Use a cross pattern to tighten the driveshaft flange bolts.

  9. Remove and discard the driveshaft flange bolts from the PTO flange, then disconnect the driveshaft from the PTO flange.
    • To install, tighten to 25 N.m (18 lb-ft).
  10. Remove the center bearing bracket bolts, then remove the driveshaft.
    • To install, tighten to 30 N.m (22 lb-ft).

  11. If installing a new driveshaft, remove the center bearing bolts and the center bearing bracket.
    • To install, tighten to 20 N.m (15 lb-ft).
  12. WARNING: Always install new driveshaft flange bolts.
    NOTE: Hand-tighten the driveshaft flange bolts to the PTO flange and the rear axle pinion flange before tightening the center bearing bracket bolts.
  13. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
